Is the Boy Scouts of America Public or Private?
Fox News ^ | Aug. 7, 2005 | Wendy McElroy

Those critical of the Boy Scouts of America argue that the Boy Scouts' exclusion of gays, atheists and females makes America more divided and divisive. One side wishes to strengthen the Boy Scouts; the other wishes to destroy the Boy Scouts by forcing politically correct changes upon it.

Over the past two decades, the Boy Scouts has been both a flash point and the ground of sustained struggle between traditional and PC values. The central issue is whether the Boy Scouts is a private or public organization.

That's why most Packs and Troops in the District give out a ribbon to the Mom when the boy earns his first rank. Mom's wear the ribbon on Pack Nite or Court of Honor Nite so that each new miniature Mother's pin of the boy's new rank can go on it.

Training them early on how to pin things on a ladies apparel with out drawing blood.

Our scout troop has made considerable improvements to public hiking trails, picked up roadside trash, collected food to be given to the local food bank, cleared brush in parks, constructed bird houses and park benches, cleaned old cemetarys, and the list goes on and on.

I would like to compare community services provided by volunteer scouts with what other so called public organizations do for their community.

That is a really great idea! Where can you get those miniature Mother's pins?

What a stupid story. Of course the BSA is private!

Each unit makes their own using pins from a craft store (sometimes hidden sometimes visible with a plastic decoration) like a broach pin and colored ribbons. Blue and Yellow for Cubs, Red White and Blue for Scouts is the general way it goes but I've seen ribbon colors that match the troop neckerchief color too.

A couple thoughts:

As an Eagle Scout and a Catholic (my troop was sponsored by my church, but not financially supported) I wish the Catholic Church had stones like the scouts, we wouldn't have the problems that we currently do with child abuse;

Second, any day that the scouts want to go completely private I (and I'm sure many other former scouts) would be glad to direct to the scouts any and all charitable contributions that I currently make to other organizations.

As a boy, the scouts taught me self reliance, confidence, and consideration for others. I must have missed the merit badge on hating other people that these ACLU types are so worried about. What do they physically strong, mentally awake and MORALLY STRAIGHT means anyway?

"Apparently they get to use Governmental land for free."

Where?

The annual jamboree is held at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Many military bases have Boy Scout chapters and supply the support.

You make several excellent points.

Regardless of the efforts of the liberal left, the BSA will not cave to the hate filled attacks disguised as diversity. The homosexuals and their allies hate the fact that we have a moral compass and live by our words.

They despise us for our religious convictions, and refuse to acknowledge that have more compassion and tolerance than they ever have.

The BSA sells minatures of the rank badges as pins that you can give to the mothers. Our Scout shop carries them. They also carry ribbons the moms can put around their necks. The Cub Scout ones are yellow with blue edging, and the Boy Scout ones are the green that matches the Scout pants/shorts with red edging.

The BSA also sells charms for charm bracelets for each rank.

Should your son make Eagle, there's an Eagle Dad pin that's also available. They're supposed to be for civilian wear, but mine is on my uniform shirt's collar.

A very good point. I don't think I see other youth organizations doing much service out there.

Other youth organizations have that politically correct appearance. They have that "feel good" look. And avoid activities that may create scrapes, bruises, or a loss of self esteem from being in a challenge or competition with their peers from other groups.
Our troop won numerous awards at camporees for fastest time to start a fire and boil water (using flint and steel) tying knots, tug of war, home built catapult competitions, first aid etc. The boys enjoy those activitys, have fun competing with other scouts from other communities and clearly are proud of their accomplishments and the ribbons they take home and put on display at the troop HQ. After a hard day of competition every troop meets around a common camp fire, sings silly songs and listens to stories. The smiles are priceless.

Other youth organizations place an emphasis on feeling good, and not competition. They want everyone to feel good and smile. there are no losers, little incentive to compete in real activitys. And the kids come out from the experience like zombies, unable to cope with real world tough situations. Work ethic and self gratification based upon accomplishment is a no no. There is little taught about taking charge and becoming a leader. When someone holds their hands constantly they are not being taught to become an individual. Liberal society wants robots and not self starters like Boy Scouts become.

That's it? For all the zillions of Scout camps and outings that take place all year, that's it? Sounds like making a mountain out of a moehill to me.
