Democrats assemble an army of veterans to beat Bush

ANDREW HORNE, clear-eyed, clean-cut and ramrod straight, never wanted to be a politician. But then something happened to the Marine Reserves lieutenant colonel who once supported the invasion of Iraq. He was sent to fight there. It was an experience that turned him vehemently against President Bush and a war he now believes can never be won definitively.

“Iraq is a symptom of what’s wrong with this Administration,” Mr Horne told The Times over coffee near his Kentucky law office.

“It’s hubristic. It’s wedded to political cronyism. It hides the truth. It ignores advice. I want to go to Washington to be part of a solution.”

Mr Horne, 44, is not alone. He is one of a dozen Iraq war veterans running for congressional seats in the November mid-term elections. What makes this new band of political brothers extraordinary is that all but one are running as Democrats, and against a war that only months ago they were fighting in.

“It’s unprecedented. It’s amazing the Democrats have found this many,” said Larry Sabato, a politics professor at the University of Virginia.

Thirty military veterans from the wars in Vietnam, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq are seeking seats in the US House of Representatives as antiwar Democrats in a country where more than half the public now consider the war a mistake.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the lesson of Hackett. He came close to winning a solidly republican district and polled better than any democrat in that district since 1974. I think the vet ploy wasn't as ineffective as you think there. In a less red district it might work.

To beat Bush? Besies the obvious naughty jokes that could be mentioned here, I wasn't aware the Bush was running again. Or even could.

Just heard/read that some Dem in VA, former Marine, is going to try to take George Allen's seat. Dems are trying hard with the packaging. It may work some. Don't discount.

Sabato is predicting bad things for GOP.

The rest of the story.

Like Hillary, Horne is a congenital lawyer.

He was a registered independent (not a Republican) before deciding to run as a Democrat.

In other words, the spin on this story is b.s.

Ed Patru, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, called Horne "a third- or fourth-choice challenger who's a dollar short and probably at this point a day late."

[If the Dems think that running against Iraq is going to be a winning ploy I've got a bridge to sell them. Stuck on stupid.]

If we don't liberate Iran by the midterms, we'll be the ones who look stuck on stupid. The Iranians will continue to kill our soldiers in Iraq until we do. If they get nukes, Iraq is lost.

And Bush is running for WHAT ?????

According to the democrat party (and it's on record) Bush was selected the first time - not elected. Therefore, he can legally run another 4 years according to the Constitution, right? A president gets to be elected twice. The left wing "lawmakers" themselves said he's only been elected once.

"...extraordinary is that all but one are running as Democrats,"

The Republican military is still over there protecting us. The ideologues have come home after they went over to the dark side. I wonder how many purple hearts they have amongst them. sKerry had 3, I think. From Vietnam, I think.

""...Thirty military veterans from the wars in Vietnam, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq are seeking seats in the US House of Representatives as antiwar Democrats in a country where more than half the public now consider the war a mistake..."

Another case of faulty news reporting by the MSM.

What war is the article referring too? Vietnam? Bosnia?

Also, notice the "tilt" of the passage; it implies that all of the candidates are "anti-war."

This veteran does not consider them veterans. If they support the anti-War movement they are TRAITORS.

I seriously believe that when '08 comes around, and GWB is NOT on the ballot, there will be some Dems that will be suprised, I mean, the Dem party is still running against him, is is only natural to assume some voters not in the political "know" will wonder where his name is on the ballot.

Mr. Horne actually had to go and do what he signed up to do, and he didn't like that.

Mr. Horne is just another whiney liberal who wants all the goodies but not the responsibility.
