Bishop of New Hampshire enters treatment for alcoholism
American Anglican Council Blog ^ | 2/13/2006 | V. Gene Robinson

Letter from the Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson February 13, 2006,

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am writing to you from an alcohol treatment center where on February 1, with the encouragement and support of my partner, daughters and colleagues, I checked myself in to deal with my increasing dependence on alcohol. Over the 28 days I will be here, I will be dealing with the disease of alcoholism-which, for years, I have thought of as a failure of will or discipline on my part, rather than a disease over which my particular body simply has no control, except to stop drinking altogether.

During my first week here, I have learned so much. The extraordinary experience of community here will inform my ministry for years to come. I eagerly look forward to continuing my recovery in your midst. Once again, God is proving His desire and ability to bring an Easter out of Good Friday. Please keep me in your prayers and know that you are in mine.

Your Brother in Christ, +Gene

Letter from the Standing Committee of New Hampshire Diocese February 13, 2006

Dear Colleagues in Ministry,

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of New Hampshire joins its bishop in writing to you about his decision to seek professional treatment for his dealings with alcohol. The Episcopal Church, through its General Convention, has long recognized alcoholism as a treatable human disease, not a failure of character or will.

The members of the Standing Committee fully support and stand with our bishop and his family as he confronts the effects of alcohol on his life, and we commend him for his courageous example to us all, as we pray daily for him and for his ministry among us.

Randolph K. Dales, President, Standing Committee of New Hampshire

Every time I hear a discussion of the purported

"Gay Gene"

 I think of the illustrious

Bishop of New Hampster.

Cute. And Clever. Sad, too. Bet that new hamster wishes it was an old hamster.

I don't if either of you are suprised. I'm not. I wonder if he has drug problems as well. Or porn addiction. And this is supposed to be a man of God.

Nauseating.

Yes, but such a prize is only recognized in the Dioceses of Washington, LA, California, and, of course, New Hampshire!

P.S. The Diocese of Newark doesn't recognize anything that might be related to discernment, judgement, or Christianity.

I am very cynical about Robinson's going into rehab at this time.

Just as a general rule, addicts go into inpatient treatment following, or in anticipation of, the sh&t hitting the fan about something. Look for some squalid disclosure or breaking piece of bad news about this guy, for which he is establishing a ready-made alibi/explanation (i.e., I was under the influence...my judgement was altered by the alcohol... I'm getting treatment now so it's OK...)

Alkies do not just wake up one fine day and say "Gee, I think I'll go into a 28-Day program today and stop drinking for the rest of my life."

It's my guess he's a member of the Man/Boy Society. Any other guesses?

Yeah, who knew 'radical hospitality' was going to be that radical.

Have you heard the moral of the Sodom and Gonorrhea story was reinterpreted- to critique 'inhospitality'?

Is he Gay?

You must be the last person on earth to hear this . . . but Victoria Imogene Robinson is as queer as a three dollar bill. (Blame his parents - they thought he was going to die at birth, so they put the name they had chosen for a girl on his birth certificate.)

I am not at all surprised that this has surfaced. I know somebody who served with him on some committees in New Hampster (I'm stealing that, Joe!) and they said, "It's ALL about Gene". He is a sociopath and narcissist, and he would destroy all the churches in the world if it would further his gay agenda. The drinking is no doubt to cover up that still small voice in his head that's telling him that using his church and his exalted position to advocate his own sexual proclivities is . . . yes . . . SINFUL. It probably bothers him a good deal when he's sober.

Very good point.

Before he was confirmed at General Convention, there was a brief kerfuffle when somebody pointed out that his website was linked to a group advocating for homosexual kids. He claimed it was an oversight or a mistake or some such (you could probably find the pertinent information in the old Virtuosity website).

Maybe some further information about that is about to break . . .

Same old, same old ...

James Albert Pike (1913 - 1969) was an American Episcopal bishop. He was the fifth Bishop of California.

[snip]

In his personal life, Pike was a chain-smoker, an alcoholic, craved attention

Perhaps he will use the Twelve Step program of AA to come back to his senses and the Lord.

Only if you knew that you were one of the main reasons the Anglican Communion worldwide was on the verge of breaking apart.

Everything is about him: "For instance, in the Passover story, I know what it's like to leave Egypt, or leave the closet. "
