A PLURALITY of one faculty has brought about an academic coup d'etat against not only Harvard University president Lawrence Summers but also against the majority of students, faculty, and alumni. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which forced Summers's resignation by voting a lack of confidence in him last March and threatening to do so again on Feb. 28, is only one component of Harvard University and is hardly representative of widespread attitudes on the campus toward Summers. The graduate faculties, the students, and the alumni generally supported Summers for his many accomplishments. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences includes, in general, some of the most radical, hard-left elements within Harvard's diverse constituencies.

For all the bad things you can say about Dersh, he's certainly not stupid. The same can not be said for most of the bozos who are trashing Larry Summers.
This article is extraordinary. The more of it you read, the more it sounds like it was written by a Freeper.
Summers was as politically correct as any feminist.
His mistake was letting his private, common sense, thoughts out into the public arena.
This "dubious victory" is a case of PC liberals eating their own.
The feminazis are cackling as they dance around their pentangles, hoisting their brooms high in the air! They won! They brought down yet another member of the phallic patriarchy who spoke against the vaginic matriarchy.
Let this be a lesson to all who once believed that Freedom of Speech was possible in the USA: if you ever speak one of the Truths That Must Never Be Spoken, you will lose your job.
Harvard is slowly sinking into the Charles River. They reject highly academically qualified wasp applicants in favor of much lower scoring minorities. The only kids from my son's high school that were either accepted or wait-listed were either black or had asian-ethnic names. PC is far more important there than excellence in academics. Pretty soon this will be seen by the general public. Harvard has only it's highly regarded name left.
And a $20 Billion endowment... there is no accountability, because what they get paid in tuition is just a rounding error vs. their investments.
Seems the President of Harvard did a poor job of finding his support from other teachers and supporters. How can one school have this much control over the entire campus??
No body else cares...
The school motto should be changed from "Veritas" to "Political Correctitas" or perhaps "Sinisteras".
bagowitz is just mad 'cause they dissed summners for being pro israel
My daughter has applied, but even if she gets in (and she probably won't, because she is a conservative Irish Catholic girl and not shy about it!) I'm not sure I'm going to let her go there. It's obviously no longer worth the money to get the name and no education. She would be happier in a more conservative, small Southern college that actually teaches the trivium and quadrivium instead of radical Marxist feminist claptrap.
What you said - - perfect!
Dersh is above all, an intelectual. He's a leftist, but there is a point where intellectual honesty trumps political ideology.
He's there.
Agree. My son had a 1560 out of 1600 on his SAT's and was rejected. He is now at a wonderful, conservative university and will do quite well for himself. Truth be told, he got into his first choice, but wanted to see if he could get into Harvard as well. The kid that did get in from his high school had 200 points lower but is a minority. My son still has some far left profs but they are not the majority. He's happy with his choice and we are as well. I used to be a peripheral feminist in college but now see how destructive the movement has been for women. Summers has common sense but that doesn't fly when it comes to feminists scorned. A very sad state of affairs in academia today.
The "college education" in general is losing its luster.
The public has been seeing drips and drabs of college idiocy since the late '60s and these days they see little difference between Harvard and Bucks County Community College, except that the community college is a lot cheaper. All the public sees is racial preferences, French politics, screeching lesbians, and college professors who went to college as teenagers and never left - - and never grew up, either.
I am saying this from the point of view of a parent with kids in college and high school. I wouldn't send my kids off to a goofball place like Harvard in a friggin' million years.
More like 30 billion by now, I think. One of the great underreported scandals in American education is the fact that these enormously rich institutions charge such absurdly high tuition and fees while they sit on such piles of cash.
Dershowitz's fame and outside income allow him to say publicly what many academics are afraid to say. I suspect there are many who privately agree with him but fear for their careers if they say so publicly.
Ping.
