Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks discusses her group's new album and her outspoken criticism of US President George W. Bush, the boycotts, the death threats, their betrayal by Nashville and why the group is "not ready to make nice."
...
SPIEGEL: Ms. Maines, three years ago, at a Dixie Chicks concert in London, you drew an enormous amount of criticism for railing against US President George W. Bush. In the United States, you were boycotted, your records were destroyed and you even received death threats. Now you're back with a new single, "Not Ready to Make Nice." Haven't you taken enough beatings?
Maines: This song had to be written because it did us good. And we also took our time on it because it wasn't easy to find the right tone. It wouldn't have been a good song if it sounded like we were scared. Some time had passed, we had more perspective what happened and this album gave us a chance to reflect and take a stance.
...
SPIEGEL: Will Hillary Clinton become the next president?
Maines: It would be crazy for the Democrats to make her their candidate. I don't think the country is ready to vote for a woman in the White House.

What an arrogant, elitist, litter box biTT!
libs like to frame the question as in "is the country ready for a woman" as if we don't want Hillary, we're somehow anti-woman!
You got it, chicksie
I would prefer to not see that graphic.
I do not hate or censor Natalie Maines. I do laugh at her when she forces her existence into my consciousness.
She gives dumb blonds a bad name.
You said . . . Probably. Achieving victim/martyr status usually has its advantages. But when you add stupidity to the mix it ruins everything.
Is Cindy Sheehan your example for victim/martyr + stupidity = train wreck?
excellent point
This one line is like an exposition on shallowness. "It was important because it did me good". It's all about Nat.
"We" created the hurricane "ourselves." This kind of facile, childish thinking just drives me up a wall.
Also, the interview is a good example of carefully couched questions that show only the side of the issue the interviewee is comfortable with. And when the answers are laughably self-serving, as many of Maines' are, the interviewer pretends not to notice, and no followup is forthcoming.
Why on earth not?
Why on earth not?
I agree. Don't even want to see their names, or a facsimile of said names, in print.
We get lots of letters from people who say that I don't agree with what you said, but you have the right to say that and what is happening to you is both horrible and un-American.
"What is happening to you?" You mean people not buying your record like the ones before? Opting to wash their hair the night of your concert? That's horrible and un-American?
Interviewer:Still... you had to cancel half of your US tour because of poor ticket sales.
Maines: That was everywhere, but it isn't true. Unfortunately, everyone believed it. The truth is that our last tour sold out in a day and sales on this one are taking a bit longer.
"A bit longer." Bwahahahahaha. Look at the chubbby (anatomically explicit pejorative deleted) lie.
It made me choke up when I read the death threat to myself.
No, Natalie, that was from trying to swallow two pork chops at once.
We tried to donate $1 million to [the Red Cross] and they wouldn't take it. We were treated like lepers.
Awwwwwwwwwwww. I wonder what conditions attached to their "gift" that caused the Red X to turn them down. That is usually one fund-raising-oriented operation. Maybe they just calculated that taking $1 mil from Fat Nat would probably cost them 500,000 $10 donations from the regular Joes and Janes she holds in such dripping contempt -- and are there for them year in and year out, not just looking for a one-shot jolt of publicity.
I's just hilarious watching her leftism clash with her greed. She has a boundless sense of entitlement and she's deeply wounded that she's not getting her props from the little people. I've seen her whine in the past that she can't get on a USO tour. That's because USO asks the troops who they'd like to see: "Anybody but..."
People have asked why this washed-up warbler gets so much play on FR. I think it's because we are Americans, we are raised on cowboy movies that show evil vanquished and good triumphant, and here's a big chance for all of us to see it happen in the flesh... about 200 lb of it. It's a morality play!

1- It's not "censorship" when people choose not to buy their music.
2- It's not that they 'criticized the president' - it's that they railed him in a foreign country during war.
3- She's an idiot and not attractive.
4- There is plenty of excellent music. I will continue to spend my money to support the people I want and not loose any sleep over it.
Hilary?
Or Condi?
"But after they did come out in Time magazine and said that about Toby and me, I was very glad that I had the written script about me being nervous doing the [2006] awards show [where] I said, 'I don't know why I was so nervous. I guess if the Dixie Chicks can sing with their foot in their mouth, surely I can host this sucker.' And I was ready to say that because I hope they realize that they're not doing themselves any favors."
"I've never turned my back on country music," she says. "So when somebody talks bad about my music, my family, that does not set well with me. And when you bite the hand that feeds you, I just don't think that's very nice."
