BUCHAREST, Romania -- A Romanian oil rig off the coast of Iran came under fire Tuesday from an Iranian military warship and was later occupied by Iranian troops, a company spokesman said.

The Iranians first fired into the air and then fired at the Orizont rig, said GSP spokesman Radu Petrescu. Half an hour later, troops from the ship boarded and occupied the rig and the company lost contact with the 26 crew members shortly afterward....

I guess the rig was trying to escape so they fired on it. Hey, does anyone know the top speed of an oil rig?

It's seems extreme action for a business dispute; just further illustrates what we are up against here. I can't believe that Fox isn't talking about it. Perhaps it's not considered big enough news (yet) for the 22nd. More the worry.

Thanks for bringing sanity to the hysterics.

The article clearly states the situation and it has nothing to do with terror attacks by Imadamnutjob.

Sounds like a job for the SEALS.
Sneak in one fine night and take ALL of the Iranians "out."
Romanians back in the following morning.

BBC morning headlines:

BUCHAREST, Romania
Iranians leave oil platform peacefully, thanks to the efforts of French president Jacques Chirac and U.N. president Koffee Anan.

Harhar. Oh well, I think it's funny, if no one else does.

Yeah, but Ferdinand wasn't exactly the King of Europe. Picture a snowball at the top of a hill. Then again, I am sure that we'll balk at doing anything, allowing Iran to commit yet another act of unpunished aggression. I hope Ploesti is still up and running.

Don't knock Jimmy Carter. He drew up a masterful plan, 5 helicopters! If it wasn't for the damned dust storm, our Military, as funded by the Democrats (along with Intelligence Services and INS) would have prevailed! The current situation in the entire middle East, after Carter told the Shah to leave, calls for another Nobel Prize for Jimmy! Carter's foresight was exceeded only by the British drawn boundaries of IRAQ.

My experience says that oil rigs are used as launching platforms for surveillance.

My guess is that the Iranians either think the Romanians are surveilling them, or they think someone else is doing so from the Romanian rig.

They have something happening that they don't want watched.

Uncanny.

This could be the beginning of World War 3 and according to my Ouija board when I was a kid, Romania will win the war.

Here's the Ouija board thread back in June where I mentioned this: http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/1651223/posts?page=15#15

LOL!

It isn't clear from the article that the oil rig isn't in Iranian territorial waters. Political risk is part of the package when doing business with the mullahs.

Sheesh, you had me there for a brief moment with that BBC reference...then I saw the fine print.

Oh well, and yet another lost opportunity for the French to serve as statesmen. :)

I did the unthinkable and left Imus for a few minutes to look in on CNBC. Thought there would be something about the price of oil. Nothing.

From your link:

Another Dubai analyst said due to political risks many companies were unwilling to extend contracts with Iranian companies.

"I think there are few international rigs operational in Iran despite the many tenders coming out," the analyst said.

The article might clearly state the situation, but it does not clearly state how a military attack on the rig is in the normal course of business.

By Selina Williams, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- A Romanian oil services company has filed protests to Iran's oil and defense ministry after its rig in Iranian waters came under fire from an Iranian military warship and was later occupied by Iranian troops, a spokesman for the Romanian operator said Tuesday.

An Iranian official said Romania's Grup Servicii Petroliere, or GSP, had failed to follow contractual procedures.
