A new dish is appearing on menus across the nation. Restaurateurs say they have little choice other than offer it, though it horrifies many customers.
That item is the $40 entree.
Until recently, such prices were the stuff of four-star, white-tablecloth meals, the kind that ended with a diamond ring on the petit four tray. But now entrees over $40 can be found in restaurants that are merely upscale, where diners wear jeans and tote children. In geographic terms, New York and Las Vegas have led the charge, and in culinary ones, luxury items like steak and lobster were first and are still most prevalent.
But the $40 entree is migrating: to restaurants in Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale and Denver, and to ingredients like fish and even pasta. Several national chains serve entrees priced above $40...

Gimme some damned MEAT!

Never went to Spark's. My circuit was Ben Benson's, Rossini's in the townhouse on East 38th, Il tre Merli, Bouterin (way east on 59th, Aureole on East 61st, Patsy's near Carnegie Hall, Shun Lee Palace if it had to be Chinese, Asia de Cuba, Cafe des Artistes and a few that are gone from memory.
We are, in fact, devolving.
I was more of a Mortimer's on Lex, Lion's Head downtown, Peter Luger in Brooklyn, Runyan's (the old one, not the new one) on the Upper East Side), and various ginmills in between.

i mainly cook for my family... we often have friends over for meals... it's something i enjoy doing... but sometimes it's fun to go to a restaurant... and on certain occasions, pricey restaurants... we enjoy it... our kids enjoy it...
last weekend we celebrated my Dad's 83 birthday... we go to the same place every year... the steakhouse at Harrah's Casino in Reno... it's pricey... the food is alright... and we always have a great time...
At least three times a month from October through April we drive in, park on the street somewhere and walk around until we get hungry, then we try someplace new that looks interesting. We've done this for years and hit dozens of places that we never would have found, will never visit again and have likely forgotten already.
Take this back! I don't want my chocolate brownie until AFTER I've had a nice, juicy steak!
Nope, not waiting at all, I'm married =^) Oh, and BTW, thet genteel nibbling behavior goes bye bye when you marry 'em. I would just prefer a woman to be honest during the courting stage, rather than the "sales pitch" some women put on(not My wife, and that IS WHY she is My wife). Truth in advertising laws should apply to dating as well IMHO

Congratulations to your father on his 83rd birthday.
The stomach of a skinny person has more room for expansion. A fat person has all that fat around his stomach preventing his stomach from expanding.
McDonalds still has the dollar menu.
I don't think that our entree was quite $40, but I do know that the cost of the meal for two, including tip was in the neighborhood of $125. Of course, that "chain restaurant" was Ruth's Chris Steak House.
It wa worth every penny... But much like a Nikon D2Xs, a Ferrarri F40, or a Ducati 999R, just because they're worth every penny, doesn't mean I can afford them. And I've only done this twice: The first time for my Grandmother's 90th birthday, and the second was a celebration for my girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend). Oh, and for that second one, I had a $40 gift card to help pay for it, so it wasn't quite so bad.

There was one company that I worked for that was extremely generous for employees while traveling. My first trip, they made reservations for me at a nearby Hampton Inn, and said that I could spend up to $35 for food. Well, the Hampton Inn was nice, but just a few miles away was a Motel 6, and it was right across the street from a Ryans. My second (and later trips) to that location had my employers jaws dropping. I would turn in my receipts, and instead of the $80 a night bill for the Hampton Inn, they saw about a $35 bill for the Motel Six, and I was spending about $15 a day on food (mostly at Ryans!) Man I loved that place. I could have had steak every night, but I was good and I'd alternate between their broiled chicken, trout, and salmon, and only have the steak once a week :-( .
But Ryans was a terrific place to eat.

Agreed, and there is no way I'm paying $7 for it either.

Heck, Rachel on the Food Network eats for 40 bucks a day. And makes millions telling us all about it ;)
