Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes (I am speechless)

Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes

BENTON, La. – The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.

Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

[snip]

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.

Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

[snip]

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.

The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.

Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

[snip]

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.

Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

Isn't that incredible! Damn, I was checking mine every few minutes to make sure they were still breathing! Poor sweet child deserves better parents than these freakin' knotheads!

Pits were bred to fight OTHER DOGS

Exactly. You made my point clearly.

Yah, right.

Like I'd let some prejudiced, ignorant idiot that close to my dogs. They'd come up to you trying to say hello and you'd get trigger-happy.

They'd never harm you, but you'd harm them. Who's the a@@shole here? Not my dogs, that's for sure.

Right, so where in that did you get human-aggressive? Nowhere.

Bred to fight DOGS. Not HUMANS.

Give it up.

Also personal experience, I'd prefer to live next to an alligator (I have).

I could not imagine sleeping next to one of my children while they were being eaten alive and not responding.

The child HAD to be crying after the first shock!

How it could have continued....

A lot of humans are "failed breeds" too, including the parents of this poor girl.

what are you smokin'? as a mother of four, i am weary of those of you lunatics (and I mean this literally) who still defend the pit bull breeds (i know there are many which are considered a pit). Are you just stupid, or function illogically? Are you parents? Do you have a brain? I don't get it. Truly. 1 + 1 = 2. Period.

And if you chose NOT to believe pits are a deadly weapon, than why wouldn't you at least accept responsibility for owning a dangerous animal, and make sure it is muzzled and chained up 100% of the time? Do you hate society and the innocent so much that you think your right to own an animal is above our right to not be mauled by your evil pet?

There is no additional education of the public or dog owners necessary to make pit bull ownership a felony crime. That is the why it should be nationwide. Pit bull owners are THE MOST OBNOXIOUS people i have ever met. Anytime i'm out in public with my kids, I have to deal with their irresponsible and outrageous attitudes and behavior.

Our neighborhood public school went on a lock down for one hour recently due to a huge pitbill running lose on campus.

hhhmm....wonder if they would have done the same thing for a poodle...or a border collie...or EVEN a German Shepherd???

nope....and neither do you...

No delusions, just facts.

Pits are not by nature human-aggressive. Your delusion is that you think you know better void of facts. Can't help you with that, but it is a cryin' shame.

Your 'facts' are what? I've experienced behavior that contradicts your BS. Repeating a lie does not make it true.

Welcome to FR...NOT.

What a joke your post is, lol. Pits are "deadly weapons" so they should be banned, eh?

Thank God libs like you don't run this country.

My dogs are not dangerous. Number two, they are always under my control, as ALL dogs should be, or are you okay with other breeds who actually bite more often running amok.

A pit will NOT "go off" for any reason. Pits are not by nature human-aggressive.

I'll bet all the people in the threads we've read about who were mauled or killed by one will be glad to hear that.

Your position is that pits are human-aggressive. You have made that assertion. Back it up.

I'll be waiting.

"Pit bulls have been family dogs for a long time, it wasn't until pimps and thugs co-opted the breed for their PROPENSITY (not PREDISPOSITION) to cause harm that the breed got a bad rap. It's obvious who knows the breed and who doesn't."

Pit bulls are the number one attack/mauling/killing dog, running far, far ahead of the pack, as it were.

Someday someone will explain to me how the pit bull assholes hijacked this site.
