GOP Blocks Gonzales No-Confidence Vote

Republicans blocked the Senate's no-confidence vote on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Monday, turning back a symbolic Democratic effort to prod him from office despite blistering criticism from lawmakers in both parties.

The 53-38 vote to move the resolution to full debate fell seven short of the 60 required. In bringing the matter up, Democrats dared Republicans to vote their true feelings about an attorney general who has alienated even the White House's strongest defenders by bungling the firings of federal prosecutors and claiming not to recall the details.

Republicans did not defend him, but most voted against moving the resolution ahead.

Short of impeachment, Congress has no authority to oust a Cabinet member, but Democrats were trying anew to give him a push. Gonzales dismissed the rhetorical ruckus on Capitol Hill, and President Bush continued to stand by his longtime friend and legal adviser.

Thanks for this article.

Another ground-swelling victory for Harry Reid (sarc)

I am so glad to see the stupid senators failing and failing and failing with this kind of nonsense.

Now, when are they going to get busy doing the work they were actually elected to do? Ever?

But... the investigation continues, full steam ahead.

Why did the Dims even bother with this vote? More meaningless politics.

Why don’t they just go ahead and impeach him? They have the authority.

They can defund the war too but they don’t.

More empty suits & skirts with no new agenda other than acting like an annoying little dog snipping at your heels.

All silly, actually. He has - what? - 18 months left on the job?

I’d really love it though if some of the Republicans accused the Democrats of attacking Gonzalez because they don’t want an accomplished Hispanic filling the job.

Once again the Senate is “working hard for the American people”. Only good thing is while they are wasting time with this they aren’t working hard at raising our taxes.

When are the Democrats going to call for Sen Reid to step down from the Majority Leader position due to his 19% favorable rating, 45% unfavorable polling from Rasmussen latest poll?????

I'd like to see it too. I heard Specter today say that he was going to vote for no cofidence even though he acknowledged that it was put out to embarass the President.

Jerk!

I frequently use Specter as an example of why I will NEVER hold my nose and vote for a RINO.

"But... the investigation continues, full steam ahead."

Nostrildumbass wastes all his time with frivolous investigations of anything remotely connected to the Republican Party....

Exactly what I was thinking...And I’m still waiting for that answer...probably no.

Sometimes it seems like they're better off doing absolutely nothing.

“Why did the Dims even bother with this vote? More meaningless politics.”

The ineptitude of the Dems is simply breathtaking. And now that they seemingly can’t get anything done, in terms of legislation, to match their swagger, they will return to their minority party modus operandi. Criticize everything and get the MSM to make it spectacular.
