House Democrats say they may break the immigration issue up into a series of smaller bills that would put off the tougher parts and allow others to pass, such as border security, and high-tech and agriculture worker programs that have clear support.

Here we see the new strategy: Firstly: get the house to pass a bill with huge support, such as a border security only bill. Secondly: go to conference with the senate, where all the bad stuff can be added back in. Lastly: ram the amended bad bill thru both chambers quickly.

Ain't gonna happen. A lot of the freshmen Dems ran to the right of the pubbie on how to deal with illegal immigration. And everyone is up for re-election next year. Some Senators, IMO, figure the voters will forget by 2010 or 2012.

It's bad news when the House Dems are making more sense than Bush or Trent Lott on a major issue.
