Simple, English. If they don’t understand, just speak louder and slower.

Boulet and other critics also complain that Spanish sometimes is used to exclude, or gossip about, people who speak only English.

Mr Boulet makes a good point. When I was stationed in Florida, there were 3 or 4 Puerto Ricans in my unit (including me.) We'd only switch to Spanish when there was no one else around, or when we were going to talk trash about someone...we called it "Secure Communication Mode."

I patronized the La Salsa in Mira Mesa for almost 2 years. I knew all the staff and they always spoke English. One day they decided to start addressing me in Spanish. I complied by ordering my food in Welsh. The young lady looked perplexed. I suggested we both stick with English. I was quite prepared to reply in German on my next visit. Anything but another recognizable "romance" language.

There are more English speakers and Chinese speakers in the world than Spanish..

Why would it be a choice of English or Spanish?

Before the Chinese speakers sue the Spanish speakers for cultural discrimination...wouldnt that be a hoot?...let’s just speak in English in the govt and public business and if the other languages-as-a-second-language speakers want to speak some other language at home while they smoke..have at it..

You’d be amazed at how many “Hispanics” are illiterate in two languages. English and Spanish.

2 points. 1) I have heard gossip/comments from Spanish speakers where I guess they figured I couldn’t understand them. It’s a totally true phenomenon. 2) Why is this thread attracting lib-trolls?

Language unifies the nation.

Divide the language and divide the nation.

It is a universal truth.

We need to nationally codify an english language clause in the law to eliminate this BS.

FL with its miami spanish population, has a constitutional amendment for english making all official docuemnts in english. Any time you see spanish it is for things like hurricane warnigns or emergencies. Deeds and legal documents are all in english. Subpoena’s are multilingual but they put the person on notice what the document is and that is it. Suits are not conducted in another language. The party has to provide a translator if needed.
