WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iran's test of a long-range missile shows the need for the United States to expand its missile defense system into Europe, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Iran's test of a long-range missile shows that it is "a real threat."

"We've been saying as we talk about missile defense in Europe that there is a real threat, and the test this morning underscores it," Gates said hours after Iran's test.

Russia has strongly opposed the U.S. program of expanding the missile defense system into Eastern Europe in countries such as in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Gates was unable to say whether the Iranian test increased what was known to be Tehran's ballistic missile range.

As Carl Of The Israel Matzav blog just pointed out, those Shibabs will put much of Europe within range if Iran transfers them to Syria and very likely, to its terrorist proxies in Lebanon and Gaza. So the threat is very real indeed and doesn't by any means only affect Israel.

If it’s this hard to convince the Europeans to defend themselves, why do we bother? In my opinon we should be contracting, not expanding NATO, and building a missle defense shield for the USA only...if Europe wants to be targeted by the islamocrazies, let them suffer the consequences. Tired of it.

Give me one reason we should help protect those socialist capons in France, Germany and the rest of Europe.

Let them build their own damn missile shield. Its past time we stopped being a baby sitter for a continent of
moral toddles who can’t even change their own diapers.

Gates is an idiot (OPINION).

Here’s one good reason:

I’d rather fight the enemy over there on that soil then wait till they come here and fight us on ours.

That's exactly my feeling about it. Why should we be spending our tax dollars to protect them, especially if they don't want the protection??

That’s one way to look at it.

On the other hand, I think its past time these ungrateful, hateful socialist parasites in those western European countries who are so ungrateful for our assistance and presence there are forced to dip into their own pockets and pay for their own defense.

Maybe if that happens, they will have to go back to the kind of 40 hour work week and more most Americans fulfill, in order to keep their miserable socialist paradises functioning.

We need to fight them HERE before we fight them THERE. THEY are HERE already or coming soon to your neighborhood with Madrasshes and Mosques preaching anti-American and anti-Christian and anti-Jewish hatred.

A lot of people on this forum seem blissful unconcerned with the prospect of a pro-Islamic President with the middle name of HUSSEIN, as long as it keeps John McCain out of the White House.

Don't even TRY to dissuade our "honorable" conservative brethren who choose to stand by their "principles" while allowing Obama to utterly devastate our country to "teach the GOP a lesson"...it is futile.
