U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice presidential candidate who backed Republican John McCain for president, will meet_with_Democratic leaders this week to determine his fate with the party.
By all accounts, it appears to be grim. Unless theres some change in sentiment determined by a new balance in the Senate, the independent Democrat from Connecticut will likely lose his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, according to several reports. That may push him into the Republican caucus.
I cant see how he keeps the chairmanship for that committee, but they will_talk and part of the discussion will focus on Liebermans actions_during the presidential_campaign, a senior Democratic aide told Politico.
Lieberman spent election night in Arizona with McCain, his close friend. He is expected back in Washington on Thursday and said hes seeking to smooth things over.
Now that the election is over, it_is time to put partisan considerations aside, he said_in a statement, and come together as a nation to solve the difficult challenges we face and make our blessed land stronger and safer. I pledge to work with President-elect Obama and his incoming administration in their efforts to reinvigorate our economy and keep our nation secure and free.
But Liebermans statements about the Democrats at the Republican Convention, and just before Election Day, have angered many Democrats. Blogs like the Daily Kos and Moveon.org, angered by his support of the Iraq war, campaigned against him in his last election. He lost the Democratic primary but won his fourth Senate term as an independent.
Even more infuriating_to some was his_appearances with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the woman who may become the new face of the GOP. "She's so strong, she's. . .so capable, she's so competent," he told a GOP rally last month in Clearwater, Fla.

He should change parties and state that he can no longer support communism.
or hagel and Lugar.
Joe better get to Israel to say goodbye, BEFORE Jan. 20.
well he won. Whole country taken over by a bunch of stupid kids.
Darn straight, boss.
Lieberman’s possibly moving to the GOP has been in the works for two years. Apparently, he’s about the only Democrat in Congress with any decent values at all. Republicans, even those who disagree with him on just about every domestic issue, should thank him for his support of the McCain ticket and welcome him to the GOP if he finally decides to jump. He wouldn’t be the only RINO in the GOP caucus, and he’d be better than some.
Looks more like he would just join the caucus rather than the party itself. That’s fine.
Joe should remain an Indy. By the time he’s back up for re-election, the people of CT will think he’s Nostrodamus
Maybe Joe and John can create a Mavericky caucus or something.
I agree that Lieberman would be welcome in the GOP. He is quite liberal in most areas except defense. However, he is honorable, a rare trait among rats. Almost every other rat is a traitor. Their vile behavior to encourage the enemy during the Iraq occupation cost the lives of many brave men and women.
Didn't they hang him in effigy at their Halloween party?
Joe Lieberman, despite his ‘nice guyness’(and support for the war - no small matter) is just what the Republicans don’t need at a time when they should be regrouping along Reagan lines - ie. lines that actually win elections on principles rather than on compromises. We would be better off sending McCain, Snowe, Collins, Voinovich, Hegel, and a few others over to the Dems, if they’d have them. And if they want to vote on conservative measures, fine, but don’t let them continue to betray certain causes under the Republican umbrella. Ever noticed there are _no_ “DINO’s”?
It’s my understanding Reed told him to report tomorrow. I might be wrong. But...
At any rate, he’s “A” ok in my book. Anytime someone puts their country first, I don’t care what they have after their name. That’s how it is in the military... and everyone’s blood runs the same color.
Liberman’s treatment by the Obama Dem’s is just a demo of Obama’s, highly proclaimed and even Messiah-like ability to reach out across the aisle.
I’m with you. He’s a good man.
Sen. Lieberman has served a good while in the US Senate. He still has four years till his next election. If I were him, I’d be proud of the service I already gave to the nation.
The prospect of a comfortable and honorable retirement in the world’s greatest nation isn’t exactly a “grim scenario.”
GREAT.
Just what need - an aging politician whose only political propinquinty with Republican values lies in limited aspects of American foreign policy matters.
Just ONE MORE REASON the Republican Party needs to go.
No thanks.
The GOP has too many Liberals already.
It is way past time for the Gelding Old Party to get a testicles & spine implant, get rid of the Liberals and start replacing them with true blue Conservatives.
Semper Fi,
Kelly
