Under a little-noticed provision of the recently passed financial-reform legislation, the Securities and Exchange Commission no longer has to comply with virtually all requests for information releases from the public, including those filed under the Freedom of Information Act.
The law, signed last week by President Obama, exempts the SEC from disclosing records or information derived from "surveillance, risk assessments, or other regulatory and oversight activities." Given that the SEC is a regulatory body, the provision covers almost every action by the agency, lawyers say. Congress and federal agencies can request information, but the public cannot.
That argument comes despite the President saying that one of the cornerstones of the sweeping new legislation was more transparent financial markets. Indeed, in touting the new law, Obama specifically said it would increase transparency in financial dealings."

Republicans need to push a bill that outlaws provisions in bills that make them immune to the FOIA. Make the democrats go on record as fighting against transparency.
More and more takeover by the “government”...or was it simply INEPT oversight?
I think it was more attempt to hide and control.
Thanks again, Scott Brown. How does it feel to be such a schmuck? (Brown provided 60th vote to pass).
We need a doomsday clock telling us how close we are to open revolution. It's real close.
“The American people want to trust in our government again we just need a government that will trust in us. And making government accountable to the people isnt just a cause of this campaign its been a cause of my life for two decades.
Barack Obama - campaign mode set at 11
Did Scott Brown actually read the bill before he voted yes?
Somebody should ask him...
This is nothing more than a complete government takeover of the financial system all to line the pockets of the politicians ensuring reelection at the very least and creating a new American Caste System.
That is the most ironic aspect, then, of the whole stupid bill.
The SEC, which is there to protect investors in large part by forcing disclosure of financial information to those investors, even holds open meetings:
The Commission convenes regularly at meetings that are open to the public and the news media unless the discussion pertains to confidential subjects, such as whether to begin an enforcement investigation.(from http://www.sec.gov/about/whatwedo.shtml)
I wonder if this will cease now that they have the right to not disclose virtually any part of their activities? My guess is that indeed that will gradually occur.
Achtung!!! Don’t ask cause we won’t tell!
Communism. Naziism. Facism.
The administration, and those who support it, are the worshippers of the zero sum, of the negative, and of the end of America.
They are the worshippers of death.
Bump!
This Communist regime must go, along with all the lawmakers who enabled it. Is it time for Henry Bowman yet?
I am not so sure it’s Browns fault.
Maybe it’s something in the water in Massachusetts.
Something seems to impair their ability to think, Perhaps lead in the water. Perhaps inbreeding with other impaired denison’s of the most liberal state. It would be great if Brown would turn himself over to science so we could find out.
Whatever it is he won’t be getting a lot of out of State dollars to re-elect his RINO POS self.
It’s too late..the pussies we elected will sit on the sidelines watching. We are so hosed.
Better still....perhaps the Tea Party movement should bombard, via phone calls, faxes and emails, our new ‘tea party’ endorsed Scott Brown with the question WHY he voted to pass a bill that contained such an exemption? Perhaps if sufficiently annoyed, he’ll be more cautious on his next vote.
It’s not enough to email. We need to get IN HIS FACE, ask the question and put the video on youtube.
I’m wondering what other Fascist surprises are packed into the Financial bill that passed.
We should refer to them as the Obama SEC every time they do things like this.
