Obama approves additional $12 mln for Da Nang dioxin cleanup (Agent Orange in Communist Vietnam!)
Thanh Nien News, the tribune of Vietnam’s Youth Association ^ | August 27, 2010 | Nguyen Phong

US President Barack Obama has approved US$12 million for an ongoing project aimed at cleaning up dioxin that has contaminated the soil and water in and around the Da Nang Airport.

The announcement was made by congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa) on August 26, during a three-day visit to Vietnam.

Faleomavaega's visit was aimed at discussing the two countries’ relationship, including cooperative efforts to mitigate Agent Orange contamination in Vietnam.

Last year, the Obama administration dedicated $3 million to dioxin cleanup efforts in the central city of Da Nang, where the airport was listed by scientists as one of several “hotspots” throughout the country.

Da Nang Airport was once used by the US Air Force as a base of operations. During the war, US forces untold quantities of defoliant chemicals loaded onto planes to be sprayed over the countryside.

It is believed that US forces sprayed over 12 million gallons of defoliats in Vietnam throughout the course of the war.

The chemicals were meant to deprive Vietnamese forces of "food and cover." The campaign ended up having long-term effects on US soldiers and millions of Vietnamese civilians.

The substance has been linked to increased instances of birth defects and at least 12 chronic diseases - including Spinal Bifidia and several types of cancer.

Why can’t we use some of that money to service national debt?

If we had any idea how much this guy, and even our own guys have cost our communities...

When the trade with China was causing about 3/4ths of a trillion dollars in trade deficits each year (or at least at that pace for a while), I used to think about what that meant to our communities.

When you start dividing $750 billion by a few thousand communities, you still come up with a very large sum. When you think about the multiplier effect on those sums, it’s even more impactful.

Still, people don’t give a rats hind end about it.

One of my fears is that the power of the presidential pen. Yes, we know he has the Executive Order. But, like with this, there is all kinds of stuff that he can do with the stroke of the pen. And we have to take it. He doesn’t care about our debt load, that’s obvious. It’s an understatement to talk about how much power he has. And every single day he hits us with another outrage. He isn’t subtle about it. He is literally attacking our nation daily.

...US$12 million for an ongoing project aimed at cleaning up dioxin that has contaminated the soil and water in and around the Da Nang Airport.

It might not be a common or popular opinion on this thread, but if this is properly performed, I have no problem with this.

For comparison, the U.S.A. spent a heck of a lot more in post WWII Europe with good results. I think the return on something like this will be multiple the expenditure.

Tell them to free their political prisoners from the war if they want to clean it up, and maybe just MAYBE we might consider to negotiate. Too bad Obama just wants to dump tons of money on people who don’t like us with no conditions.

I hear the sound also, though none of my immediate family served in (in combat) in those wars. My brother-in-law, though, was a door gunner in Viet Nam. He died of an aneurism, way before his time, a classic symptom of exposure to Agent Orange. He would not approve of this baloney from zerobama.

John McCain and John Kerry both agreed to drop those inquiries and normalize relations in the ‘80s. It’s over.

Better yet, how about all that money go to the gulf residents disenfranchised by Obammy’s oil drilling moratorium.
