The Obama administration will change aspects of the No Child Left Behind education law by executive action rather than wait for a congressional overhaul, officials announced Monday.
The Department of Education will issue waivers to states granting them relief from penalties under the 2002 law that could take effect next year. The announcement by the White House and education secretary Arne Duncan is a slap at the Republican-led House, where efforts at a bipartisan overhaul of the George W. Bush-era law have progressed slowly. President Obama had called on Congress to revise and reauthorize the law before leaving for its August recess, but neither the House nor the Senate acted.
With no clear path to a bipartisan bill in Congress, the president has directed us to move forward with an administrative process to provide flexibility within the law for states and districts that are willing to embrace reform," the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, Melody Barnes, said in a statement.

WOW.... talk about looking down your nose at people... i started out as a welder, not a steel sticker, but a real welder, with book learnin’ and stuff..the trade was good to me, and I made good money while attending college at night and raising a family...there is nothing at all wrong with the trades...you are a disgusting human being
Have you checked eBay?
I fail to see where his post is insulting to any one...some children ARE better suited to trades than college!!!
Wow, what is your problem? I was an electrician for years. I sold electrical supplies for years. I was in management in the home building business for years. I sold new homes for years. If it wasn’t for trade contractors I wouldn’t have made a living at all.
What I’m saying is everyone can’t be a computer programmer or a doctor or a lawyer. Leave some of them out of the communist classrooms and put them in vo-tech.
Now, who’s disgusting?
Which was my point exactly. The only trades we seem to have today are from Mexico. I know the cheap labor pushed a lot of people out of those fields. But so did society when they started pushing that “everyone needs a college degree” crap. I’d advise a young man today to learn a trade over any BA degree.
Some of the best compensated people I know are in the trades, especially men who went into business for themselves. Law, education, and professional careers are biased against men these days.
Agreed - the federal government meddling in local education issues is NOT conservative.
Maybe you shouldn’t be so touchy. Just kidding.
What happened is society started shaming people who didn’t have liberal college degrees. I fell for that crap myself. I’ve always wished I’d have stayed in the “blue” collar life.
Most of the trades do require college these days so your statement makes no sense? When hubby went for his Journeysmen’s card it took 4 years of education and he is about 2 credits short of an engineering degree.
As stated above the trades REQUIRE college now days to get. So your insult to those who have earned a trade card is insulting since they did have to have 4 years of college to get it.My hubby spent 4 years earning his Jpurneyman’s card it took 4 years of college to get.
“What happened is society started shaming people who didnt have liberal college degrees.”
That is so true. I think of an experience from a couple years ago when my hubby and I hired our neighbor (and his company) to paint some rooms in our house. On no less than two separate occasions he made self-degrading remarks about being “just” a lowly painter!
After some thought, I replied to him that he should never apologize to ANYONE for being a honest, hard-working business owner providing jobs to his workers as well as a much needed service to schmucks like myself who couldn’t paint a straight line if my life depended on it! :-)
God bless All of you folks in the trades!
It is disgusting because the trades have changed and now DO require a 4 year college education to get your Journeysman’s card that along with the work requirements. If someone can’t make it in college then they surely will not make it in school while having to work at the same time.
I’ve never heard of anyone having to have a four year degree to be a brick layer. Must be union thing.
If you take it as an insult, that’s your problem. Today trade schools are a lot more valuable than a piece of paper from some liberal college. Trade school graduates typically work in their field. College graduates typically do not.
Zero accountabilty
Sorry to burst your bubble but you are absolutely wrong...I taught building trades and most do not require college credit!!
That trade may be different than electrician, plumber, and maintenance through the federal Journeymen’s program. They all require college now and did when hubby got his card.
Of course not. The whole point of the waiver is to free the (minority) school from any kind of performance standards and, at the same time, keep the federal money rolling in.
An article posted yesterday had a little more detail about the program.
