The NYPD now has anti-aircraft capability.
New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly tells "60 Minutes" that the NYPD has "some means to take down a plane" in what he termed an "extreme situation," during an interview tonight on CBS, according to a transcript of the exchange.
Under fire by some for police counterterrorism tactics highlighted in a series of Associated Press articles, Kelly doesn't elaborate to interviewer Scott Pelley exactly how cops could take down a plane, but when asked point-blank whether the police have the equipment and training to pull off such a feat, Kelly responds, "Yes"
"Do you mean to say that the NYPD has the means to take down an aircraft?" Pelley asks.
To which Kelly responds: "Yes, I prefer not to get into the details but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."
"You have the equipment and the training," Pelley follows up.
"Yes," Kelly answers.

Lovely.
Lots of lives would have been saved on 9/11...
Where in Hell does Anti-Aircraft capability appear in a police job description?
Ray Kelly should be in charge of Homeland Security. Janet Napolitano couldn’t find Chris Christie in a Portapotty!
I don’t know from this if they’re talking anti aircraft missiles or simply large bore machine guns.
How about on July 17, 1996?
Excellent question.
A cloud of debris that had been an aircraft slamming into the side of a tower would probably harm it less than what happened on 9/11.
But this kind of attack is so last decade. All large jets flying commercially in the US today have to have securely locked cockpit doors from takeoff till landing, and can not be hijacked. A terrorist would be stupid to try. Today the chief fear for creating damage to terrestrial installations is a bomb in a truck, maybe even a nuclear or dirty bomb.
Stinger MANPADS I’d bet.
The ultimate militarization of police.
The militarization of our police along with their union support and no understanding any longer of protect and serve is a very bad omen.
And if you see the video’s of 9/11 - nothing would have stopped them.
You’re right on this HiTech - we’re always planning for last year’s attack... Thanks for the comments.
The New York Police Department can shoot down an airliner full of civilians and kill masses of people on the ground from the falling, fiery debris.
Then they can answer to the citizens of New York City as to why they recklessly and randomly killed so many innocent people on the ground.
It is not the job of ANY city police department to shoot down airplanes.
This is an excellent reason for any sane person to move out of New York City and not place his/her life in the hands of such irresponsible government planning.
Is this what you call destroying the village to save it?
This is obviously a scenario to kill some to save others. What others? The elites? Government leaders?
The New York City Police Department apparently has assumed the role of the ultimate "death panel" with no appeal.
Ah yes, the “kill them all, let God sort it out” strategy.
If we think you are evil, we will shoot you down, and everyone on board dies. Neat solution.
Folks think it is cool when they see a F 16 escorting them to the airport......guess what, that F 16 is there to kill you and everyone aboard!
Are court orders needed for the NYPD to shoot down civilian aircraft? I didn’t think so.
I’ve been saying this for years.
The police are no longer there to protect and serve, but to harass and ticket. We have become the police unions and governing body’s ATM machine.
I want my Country back!
I hope they are being really careful about who they hire for those slots; I’d hate to see a terrorist infiltrator get their weapons as part of their job on the police department.
"Whisper-Mode!"
Just something else for a democrat administration to sell to the highest bidder.
Wonderful.....Unions with Anti-aircraft capability.
Maybe they should acquire nuclear first-strike capability too.
Sheer idiocy.
I think the police chief owes all of us who might be in “his” airspace exactly what his rules of engagement are, how he coordinated this with the FAA and the military, and how he is going to not f this up.
I don’t think he’ll have a good answer. Time to take the police force toys away. They are not, and never will be competent enough to wield these weapons. No way.
Has anyone reported this to “Attack Watch?”
