Senate Passes Stopgap Spending Bill to Avert Shutdown
Fox News ^ | September 26, 2011

WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted Monday night to send a temporary spending bill to the House to avoid a government shutdown, Democrats and Republicans appeared to have reached a final-hour resolution to an impasse over disaster aid.

The vote in the Senate was 79 to 12 to fund the government through Nov. 18, giving the two sides more time to haggle over long-term spending levels. The Senate also approved an even shorter-term spending bill -- funding the government into next week -- by a voice vote to give the House time to reconvene and approve the followup legislation.

"Senate Democrats have conceded that the spending level in the House-passed bill was the most responsible solution," Boehner spokesman Mike Steel said in a written statement. "If it weren't for House GOP efforts, the American taxpayers would have been on the hook for even more reckless borrowing by Washington Democrats."

It looks like Boehner won this round.

For those who think Fox News is conservative, please read this whole article. It basically spins the story to show that the GOP was hindering the process and Reid gave in to help the disaster victims. There's little to no mention of the Solyndra Scandal and the GOP’s attempt to balance the latest spending measure with a decrease in the wasteful loan program that fostered that scandal.

A good exercise is to read Fox contributor Chad Pegram’s bio. If he isn't a liberal, I don't know who would qualify!

Foxnews has been tacking left for some time now. Especially, with their unadulterated support of Romney!

I don't want Fox or any news outlets to be "conservative". I just want them to report both sides of the issues. My read of the article is that it presents statements from both sides which is what they are supposed to do. I've seen worse.

On another note I found the exchange between Landrieu and Cantor to be interesting. Why shouldn't disaster relief money have to be found through budget offsets somewhere else. There is no free money.

Our leadership needs to be replaced. They have presided over the looting of this country. I want them out. I want them ridiculed and if possible arrested.

Fair comments, but I didn't say I wanted Fox to be conservative. I just pointed out that those who say it is are wrong. You found article to be even handed and gave both sides. That is my point.

Pegram has a true blue-blood liberal resume starting with his stint at NPR, yet is one of the main Fox political reporter-editor.

I just thought it odd that what was elsewhere reported as the key sticking point, the off-set of monies from the so-called green tech loans (Solyndra), was not mentioned in this article. I think that issue is necessary to understand what was going on with the authorization deal.

Boehner did NOT win this round. This round should not have been fought. By continuing the practice of passing continuing resolutions instead of insisting the Mary Reid pass a budget as the House did, Boehner has surrendered to the half-assed unaccountable spending practices of the democrats.

It’s not a win at all. He should have said “we did our job and passed a budget; we invite Mr. Reid to do his job and do likewise.”

He didn’t win the headline. It’s a Democrat headline to say the Senate did anything. They started the troubles and continued it.

I’d say the GOP and Boehner lost... along with the country.

Thank you!!

Whenever I have an emergency expense, I either dip into my rainy day fund (which I have, since I make sure to run a SURPLUS), or I cut back on other luxuries to offset the unexpected expense.

Most sane folks do the same. Why should the government behave any differently??

Oh, and if I remove c-i-s-s from your screen name, it becomes 'paula', which implies a woman.

So you need to let me hit that.

The House wanted money cut from “green” programs to pay for the spending. Did the Senate vote for that? If not, it is another complete cave by Boehner and another win for the progressives.

In addition, the agency has been able to reclaim unused money from past disasters, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing lack of authority to discuss the matter publicly.

Hey, look what we just found in our pants pocket!
