The 20 Cars Most Likely To Last 200,000 Miles

If you're going to buy a new or used car, it's good to know that it's not going to break down after a few thousand miles. Even better is knowing that it'll have a good shot at crossing the 200,000 mile mark.

To find the vehicles mostly likely to reach that milestone, iSeeCars, which helps shoppers find good deals on used cars, analyzed listings for 30 million used vehicles from the past year.

Turns out that if you want to go the distance, your best choice is the Ford F-250, followed by the Chevy Silverado 2500HD. If you want an SUV that will hit 200,000 miles, take the Chevy Suburban. For a regular car, take the Honda Accord.

The trucks on the list are pretty big. So it's worth noting that there's a trend in the auto industry toward crafting pickups that are lighter in weight. Does that mean these trucks won't last as long, as aluminum replaces steel in their construction? That remains to be seen. But the bottom line right now is that when it comes to vehicles, a big old heavy truck is where you should go.

Obviously, there are some practicality issues to deal with. Not everybody needs a Ford F-250, a truck designed to absorb some punishment and do things like haul around large boats.

The iSeeCars data shows what percentage of each kind of car has 200,000 miles or more on the odometer, by model. So the chart below shows that 4.2% of Ford F-250 Super Duty trucks listed for sale have already driven more than 200,000 miles.

Here are the top 20 longest-lasting vehicles:

When I was in my early 20's, I worked at the Ford plant in Freemont, California making Ford F-150's...that job lasted five weeks till the union guys ran me off for working to hard.

That happened to me too when I was in my early 20s and just starting out. I got a "union" job at the airport as ramp agent. Those are the guys who handle the aircraft on the tarmac, unload and load baggage, flush out the lavatories, wave it in with the glow-sticks, etc.

Anyway I got paid something like $12.37 an hour which was good money back in the day. We are talking about 30 years ago. But I ran into issues quickly because I worked too fast. I had just come out of the Marine Corps and was full of energy and work ethic. I didn't believe in standing around with my hands in my pocket.

People used to sidle up to me and say "Don't kill the job, man". Because if everybody worked as hard as me, they'd only need about half the workers! Finally, I was politely informed by the "chief" that this line of work was not for me and when I got to my car that night, two tires were flat. I took the hint and went on to bigger and better things.

Anyway, so as not to totally hijack the thread with that story, I pretty consistently put 200,000+ miles on my Nissan cars (both Maxima and Altima models). The secret is to have all the recommended service done at the dealership - at the proper intervals by Nissan-certified techs. Many people think dealer service is a waste of money because you can go to Jiffy Lube for oil changes and have your other repairs done at "Joe's auto repair" down the street for a lot cheaper. But that has not been my experience at all.

I should have mentioned:The NHTSA Action Number is...DP12004. Explains things better than I do. Mostly Pathfinders/Exterras.

They say some of those Hyundais are as good as the old Hondas.

I have had a few Nissan Pathfinders that I have driven well past 100k. Still have one up at my place in Colorado. Close too 1ook and the engine is still solid it's just very rickety and not comfortable to drive in anymore. I think it's a 1992.

Love hearing all the brags about Fords. My husband worked on the Ranger and Explorer production. My sister has an Expedition with over 200,000 miles. If any one needs a Ford Friends and Neighbors discount, I can get you one!!

Yup. Believeable story.

I had a similar story with the Maritime Union.

Had an ‘04 Saab 9-3 that I traded for a 2011 Subaru Outback at ~215,000 miles. Have 106k on the Subaru now

Lucky for you that you live in Alabama where winters don't take their toll like they do on vehicles here in Michigan.

Last year I finally had to get rid of my small 1995 Honda Del Sol with 220,000 miles due to the rear quarter panels rusting out and several issues that I didn't want to have to pay for...........

Small cars like that were not made for year around driving in our conditions and I'm pleased it lasted as long as did........

I have a 94 Nissan Sentra with almost 230K on it.

The AC gave out about ten years ago... really, in Seattle I can live without air.

Put new rear struts on it last spring.

Just keep the juices fresh and you are good to go!

I sold my 1992 Accord EX last year with 275,000 miles. Got 1150 cash. That is impressive.

I’m sure a lot of folks don’t want to hear this but.

My 1993 Cadillac STS had just over 190,000 miles (all mine) on it when I got rid of it. Never any problems, other than a pin hole leak in one of the fuel lines that sprayed gas all over the engine. I probably changed the oil/filter three times. Loved that car.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 180,000 right now. I haven’t changed the oil for the last 50,000 miles since I usually just add two quarts a month when the light comes on.

We have a 1987 F150 that is used in the family business that has over 300,000 miles on it. It is used almost daily.

I hope you have a fine and blessed day.

Thank you! All my days are blessed, however some days come wrapped in paper that, at the moment, I don't recognize as "Blessing Paper". Romans 8:28

BTW, When I got home from Vietnam in 1969, I bought a 1970 FIAT 124 Sport Coupe, British Racing Green, tan interior. Handled wonderfully, could carry 4 adults & luggage, had the sorriest electrical components ever - even worse than Lucas!

Worse than the cheap Chinese light switches sold in small shops in villages in Africa or Central America!

High end cars have a lot of electro-mechanical stuff that eventually gets too annoying when it breaks, and too expensive to fix unless you’re a collector.

Not surprisingly, the list is heavily tilted towards vehicles used commercially. Vehicles with fewer options, high miles in a relatively short time, and regular ordinary maintenance.

My Volvo has its “engine” light on, never thought a thing about it till emissions inspection time. Mechanic said anything newer than a ‘96 can’t be tested with the engine light on or it automatically fails. Wish it were a ‘95 :(

(on that score, don’t think VA is any better than MD)

My 2004 WJ Grand Cherokee i6 just passed 190,000. Crossing my fingers she’ll go for another 60k.
