Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

Some 100,000 Americans live in US Virgin Islands... One individual said....”my friend there told me she’s packing up her house “Like I might never be back.”....

I would throw in some furniture dollies and a wheelbarrow to move drywall and “stuff” out to the street.

Maybe strap a jon boat on the roof of your vehicle?

If the area you want to go to is heavily hit,
the authorities will not let you in,
which is why many refuse to leave in the first place.

Gonna take you a long time to get thru downed trees with a recip.
Pack a good chain saw (or two) & a couple extra chains.

Pentagon diverting two warships and Marine expeditionary unit for post Irma relief. Not sure if I’ve heard of that before. Kinda ominous?

That is called Trump being proactive!

For a perspective on size. Pennsylvania does not need a hurricane to wreck its cities, we have Democrats more than up to that task.

At K, we didn’t have the drone delivery/drop tech we do now. And there’s a huge private FL Navy to assist in logistics of getting people and supplies around.

This is a huge storm. Looking at the Hurricane Hunter data and the present direction / path, barring a “wobble”, it appears winds over 100 mph will carve a path over 1 degree of latitude wide over BVI.

The “wobbles” are unpredictable (at least at present) - everyone on the island had better be in a very robust structure, well above water, by tomorrow morning.

Fox 35 here in Orlando just said the models are mostly converging EAST now! This is because of the cold front coming down from Canada and weakening the western edge of the high which has been preventing Irma from moving north. He said Irma could make a sharp turn east after the Bahamas and go north because of this and miss the state of Florida entirely. He said this is only one run of the computer models but if it continues it will be great. He also said that if Irma hits Florida...Orlando would have 100 mph sustained winds and north of Orlando would have 80-90 sustained winds. Yikes!

The Marine ships were being deployed for Harvey, but have now been held back for Irma.

They aren’t saying it but I am sure its because they want to keep them in the open atlantic for now to dodge Irma/ Jose, rather then head into the gulf ahead of Irma which would limit their ability to avoid the storm if it ends up in the gulf.

A chain saw came in handy for me - lots of trees down after Georges. Also electric fan/s, bug spray (mosquitos were bad), gas grill, coffee maker and clorox.

And for your own sanity, a battery-operated fan and extra batteries for it, to have a fighting chance of sleeping in comfort at night.
