Andrew Brigida is the son of a former New York City police officer. When he was 12, his family moved to a suburb of Phoenix, and at the urging of a neighbor he decided to become an air-traffic controller. In 2013 he graduated with two aviation-related bachelors degrees from Arizona State University, one of the dozens of schools with which the Federal Aviation Administration has partnerships to vet candidates for its air-traffic-control training program.
Graduates of these Collegiate Training Initiative schools then must pass the Air Traffic Selection and Training exam, or AT-SAT. This eight-hour test is designed to assess numeric ability, tolerance for high-intensity work, capacity for solving problems, and so forth. The goal is to determine their likelihood of completing the requisite training to become an air-traffic controller. Training a controller is expensiveon average it costs more than $400,000and the CTI system has proved an accurate predictor of whos got what it takes.
Mr. Brigida completed the college program, aced the AT-SAT and received a strong recommendation from an academic adviser. He was then placed on a list with other prospective controllers, who would be sent to Oklahoma City for the mandated 15 weeks of training. Five years later, Mr. Brigida still is not working as an air-traffic controller. What happened is the Obama administration.
In 2013 the Obama FAA changed the process for hiring controllers and then applied the new policy retroactively. No longer would the FAA give hiring preference to applicants with degrees from CTI schools or military experience, as it had in the past. In order to foster diversity in control towers, the agency would move away from merit-based hiring and toward more subjective measures. To attract a higher percentage of candidates from racial and ethnic minorities, a biographical questionnaire, or BQ, was added

Diversity is utterly worthless.
Worthless...and worse...it is racist.
The only thing that should count is the quality of thought and performance, not the color of skin.
Skin color intrinsically adds absolutely zero, nada, zilch, to ANYTHING.
Especially anything having to do with what should be merit based professions such as flying an airliner, performing surgery, or...
Routing aircraft full of people through the sky.
This is such cosmically bad policy that I can't believe it wasn't mentioned during the campaign and fixed almost immediately on Trump's election. Why are we hearing about it again, now, as if it was just discovered?
Flying the “friendly skies”?
Obama’s policies... a dangerous toxic mix of insanity and inanity.
My first news on the subject came from Tucker Carlson on Fox a few days ago...
Die in the air due to liberal bull shit.
According to the Left, “merit” is a racist codeword.
“Die in the air due to liberal bull shit.”
Be one of the first to arrive at the scene of the accident thanks to Obama.
The airport control tower, the cockpit, the repair hangar...Lots of places are no place.
Yet another example of the fact that PC trumps all other factors.
PC is more valued than safety and, indeed, human life.
If some have to die in the name of PC, that is a price they are gleefully willing to pay.
How many Blacks piloted Air Force One on all of Obama’s jaunts? Inquiring minds want to know.
Maybe you can report what happen, maybe.
I buddies son became an air traffic controller during GW Bush’s administration. He did it the hard but cost effective way($0). He joined the air force after high school with the deal he would become a controller. He spent a year in the US and then another in Iraq during the war. He came back and immediately went in the FAA school. After three months he was given a choice of airports around the country. He has been at Miami International ever since. FYI, his starting salary was $75K.
If anyone other than Rev. Dr. King had said "content of character" they'd have been called racist.
Anyone white, that is.
Many years ago, there was an episode of Sanford & Son that revolved around Fred’s refusal to be treated by a black doctor. The most effective humor has at least a morsel of truth.
“Diversity is utterly worthless.”
Not in everything. For example it’s nice to have cars in diverse colors, or having restaurants serve a variety of dishes, in other words there are cases where having a choice is desirable, because not everyone likes a particular color or dish.
Where it’s worthless and even dangerous is in situation where most everyone agrees as what the “best” is and would opt for it over other available choices.
For example when it comes to choosing a doctor, any sane person would want to go for the best available doctor, every time, the diversity of race, height gender does not enter in my decision. Providing a mediocre or incompetent black doctor for diversity sake doesn’t add to the quality of the offering. Even a black patient wouldn’t opt for that.
Oh, I know.
One of the things I detest about the left is their hijacking of language and symbols.
The words “Gay” and “Diversity” used to have perfectly good meanings, but I cannot use them now without feeling anger, so...I don’t.
The symbol of the rainbow, one of God’s symbols to us as a promise, and one of the most beautiful phenomena in nature, can only be referenced in a photograph to show a beautiful natural rainbow. Now, if you use it in any other context, it means something different.
I feel angry over things like this. I know they are small things, but I view them as a despoilment of our world. I just can’t help it.
