San Francisco's streets are so filthy that at least one infectious disease expert has compared the city to some of the dirtiest slums in the world.
The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of the city in February, finding giant mounds of trash and food on the majority of streets. At least 100 discarded needles and more than 300 piles of human feces were also found in downtown San Francisco, according to the report.
San Francisco's new mayor, London Breed, had proposed adding nearly $13 million to the city's $65 million street cleaning budget over the next two years, according to NBC Bay Area.
"I will say there is more feces on the sidewalks than I've ever seen growing up here," Breed told NBC Bay Area last month. "We have to make sure people who live here, [and] sadly, people who are homeless here, that they are also held accountable for taking care of our streets. This is our home."
Mohammed Nuru, San Francisco's director of public works, is the city's point man charged with cleaning up the streets. He tells Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson that "it's definitely challenging times" and that the department has been diverted away from normal trash pickup routes into the areas concentrated by people who are homeless.
"Our resources have been focused on really trying to clean up areas that mostly have been trashed by homeless, had tents where people [were] living in them," Nuru says. "People were using the streets for the bathroom. ... It creates definitely a different problem."
The sprawling California city that is a hub for major tech companies such as Uber and Twitter is being choked by an affordable housing crisis that is pushing more people onto the streets.
The 2017 San Francisco Homeless Point-in-Time Count, a report on the city's homeless population, identified 7,499 sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in the city of 884,000. Nearly 49 percent of those were counted in neighborhoods surrounding downtown.
San Francisco has become "a magnet" for the homeless because the city has boosted spending to fight the crisis over the past five years, Nuru says. The West Coast cities of Seattle, San Diego and Sacramento, Calif., are also experiencing severe shortages of affordable housing.
"A large number of the people we see on our streets are not necessarily from San Francisco," he says. "They are coming from surrounding counties and, in some cases, across state lines."
The filth in the street is raising alarms among medical experts. The biggest concern: the spread of disease.
Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, Berkeley, told NBC Bay Area that dried feces can release dangerous viruses, such as rotavirus, which is the most common cause of diarrhea in infants and children worldwide. Getting pricked with discarded drug needles can also spread HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B, among other viruses, Riley said.
"The contamination is ... much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India," says Riley, who researched health conditions caused by extreme poverty in some of the world's poorest regions.
Street conditions in San Francisco are so bad that a Chicago-based medical association recently decided to cancel future events in the city, including a major convention that normally hosts more than 15,000 attendees, according to the San Francisco Travel Association, which declined to name the organization.
Nuru says the tourism industry is concerned that street conditions will affect the bottom line. According to the San Francisco Travel Association, spending by tourists reached more than $9 billion in 2017.
"We have been working with the convention staff ... our tourist industry and really trying to address the concerns," he says. "I would hope that this is just a short-term type of concern and that we can really get our city to where it should be: a nice clean destination for people who want to come out to the West Coast."
Maybe if the people said anything, they would be arrested for a hate crime. 👎
They are too afraid to protest since many, if not most, of the people have a plastic drinking straw stashed in their car at home and don't want to draw attention lest they get arrested themselves for an even bigger hate crime.
NPR failed to mention that the mayor and city council are all Democrats. Have been for generations. The poop is a direct result of the oh so tolerant left and their liberal policies.
Isnt progressivism wonderful?
San Francisco has become “a magnet” for the homeless because the city has boosted spending to fight the crisis over the past five years, Nuru says.
...
Let that be a lesson.
Once the prettiest city in America.
Transsexuals were flummoxed for years on which bathroom to use (according to the left)...San Francisco responded with:
Use any sidewalk you want.
yeah, cleaning it up will fix the problem. Yep, for sure....
everywhere dems govern eventually becomes a shithole.....fact
If people from Chicago think your city is a shithole, your city is a shithole.
It would such a simple, if not easy, thing to defund NPR/PBS of taxpayer funding. I know its a small thing budget-wise, but its not a small thing in the effect of the water they carry for the left, especially as too many people just assume that theyre non-biased because they say they are, and a lot people listen to/watch them. Its very much both he principle of the thing, and the insidious, mendacious, and widespread enough effect of their leftist propagandizing. I dont know why we (on the right) just let this slide, year after year. its like when union people had their dues go to the rat party, even if they didnt support or vote for rats.
San FranFeces.
And their stations openly discriminate against disabled people. But yet, the left holds them up as the paragon of fighting for those who have no voice.
Want to see my termination letter? (I got a job at another station at a NON NPR outlet).
street defacation is a hate crime, an act of vindictive hatred
I believe you, proof unseen. The left is infamous for setting standards for others to which they deem themselves exempt.
SF ripe for Cholera, Typhoid, Black Death (plague), etc.
SF is magnet for the WORLD’s homeless and their rats.
Of course they didn’t delve into the how or why.
I mean, just consider who they deemed to be the conscience of the Senate-a former KKK Grand Dragon (Robert Byrd). No conservative would ever get away with that, not even if he sacrificed his first-born as propitiation. Their lion of the Senate-Ted Swimmer Kennedy, who went to home to sleep it off after leaving a woman to drown. Their newest rising star (lol), Ocasio-Cortez, whom had an openly anti-Semitic volunteer on her campaign, who stood right behind her as she gave her primary election victory speech. Not a peep from the msm about that.
It would take me years to list all the examples of their hypocrisy-and its all the more irksome because they cut those on the right no slack in meeting the standards they set out for all others, except themselves. Even standards which we on the right dont even espouse (such as allowing illegals into the country).
My sister lives in Manteca and she says the city is being flooded by the homeless and prostitutes. She has noticed human feces in the parking lots. The plague is spreading.
