The core democratic principle is that people should have a meaningful say in political decisions that affect their lives. In Alabama, we’ve just seen what the opposite of democracy looks like: 25 white male Republicans in the state senate were able to ban almost all abortion in the state. The consequences of that decision fall exclusively on women, who will be forced to carry all pregnancies to term if the law comes into effect. And, as has happened in other countries with abortion bans, poor women will be hit hardest of all – the rich can usually afford to go elsewhere.
There is no reason to respect the legitimacy of this kind of political decision, in which those in power show no sign of having listened to the people they’re deciding on behalf of. Though plenty in the pro-life movement are female, the people who will be most affected are nowhere in the debate. Unfortunately, structural problems with the US government mean that we’re heading for an even more undemocratic future.
White men have never made up the majority of the US population, and yet from the country’s beginnings they have made up most of its political decision-makers. The constitution itself is an outrageously undemocratic document. People today are bound by a set of procedural rules that were made without the input of women, African Americans or native people. The framers quite deliberately constructed a system that would prevent what they called “tyranny of the majority” but what is more accurately called “popular democracy”.
That set of rules has been very effective at keeping the American populace from exercising power. James Madison was explicit about the function of the United States Senate – it was “to protect the minority of the opulent against the majority”.

Decades ago, when they realized that Americans were too prosperous and happy to buy their leftwad crapola, they adopted the motto “worse is better,” started their long march through the institutions, and set out to turn America into a place that they could turn communist.
They seem to think they’re just about there.

I’ve got a theory that it was from the psychedelic era, the late fifties and sixties.
Mind altering (actually reason dissolving) drugs became “cool” even by those who never actually partook. Popular songs began to reflect psychedelic points of view. The devils of what the bible calls “sorcery” began to dote on that. “Nothing is real — and nothing to get hung about.” (Strawberry Fields Forever) “What the truth is, I can’t say anymore.” (Nights in White Satin)
With greater or lesser success, the drugs that were used for this purpose were banned — but the music played right on. If you can’t “trip” on drugs, you can still “trip” on music.

As long as you want to stay out of poverty and have a court system based on rule of the law instead of rule of the jungle.

Rich white men rule pretty much every country worth living in.
By the way, our first black president, B.J. Clinton, was not a RICH white man. Hell, he lived in government housing earning lowly government servant’s wages for most of his adult life until his smart lawyer wife (not a rich white man either) figured out how to leverage their lowly government servant jobs into multi-million dollar money makers.
Our second black president, Barak Obama, wasn’t a rich white man either. But he gave it the old college try trying to fundamentally transform America into a third-world hell-hole. Don’t know how he got into those fancy schools, but obviously it was not on merit. He’s a grand example of epic fail. Thank God.
Come to think of it, Jimmy Carter wasn’t rich either. He was a peanut farmer in Georgia.
LBJ wasn’t rich either. Didn’t want to be a farmer like his daddy so graduated from Southwest Texas Teachers College and then served as a lowly public servant for his entire life. And he managed to hide his ill-gotten wealth fairly well. Had it not been for his pussy-footing decisions re war in Vietnam, LBJ would’ve been worshipped by all democrats black and white. I think he passed more new deal stuff than his hero FDR.
Truman wasn’t rich either. He was a farmer and failed haberdasher from Missouri. Born poor and died mostly the same. Didn’t take any government money with him.
Now, the Democrat God, FDR, was a genuine rich white man. Born to wealth and born to rule. Had he not died in his fourth term, he might still be sitting in the Whitehouse today. Black and white, they still worship him.
And their mini-God, JFK, was also a born rich white man. And like FDR, they worship him.
A few things all these leaders (white or black, rich or poor) had in common was a love for America, our founding, our status as a leading world power and a burning passion for freedom and to fight against communism, fascism, tyranny, etc, and they all professed to love our constitution and our God. All of them actually prayed to God in public for our servicemen, for our country and for all of us (hmmm... well, maybe bot so much in Obama’s case).
I don’t think it’s wealth or color of skin that matters so much to the liberal/progressive complainers here. I think it’s America’s love for God, God’s laws and our own rule of law that gets to them. That and the simple fact that we are a free people and don’t want a Marxist dictator spreading the wealth around as he pleases.
So I guess what this CREEPAZOID Nathan Robinson at the GUARDIAN is saying is that these poor women can’t afford a buss ticket, or don’t have any friends that can drive them across a state line.
Even if Roe v Wade was overturned by the SC, there would still be plenty of states that have made a sacrament out of abortion (murder) and would continue to perform them.
I know this to be a fact because I live in one of those sh!thole states.

I am completely opposed to my states new law. 62 percent or more of those abortions are of minorities. We don’t need more of them. We need more. We should pass a bill offering cost + for abortions in those areas where they would most productive.
