RIP, AK-74: Russia’s Military Set to Receive a New Rifle

efense manufacturer Kalashnikov, a subsidiary of industrial giant Rostec, told reporters at Russia’s ARMY 2021 defense exhibition that the AK-12 assault rifle will become the new basic weapon for Russian troops. “The AK-12 has served as a replacement for the AK-74 since 2018 and will become the basic gun of the Russian Armed Forces in the next few years,” Kalashnikov’s press office announced. The company noted that the AK-12’s current and final design is based on feedback from field tests conducted in the lead-up to ARMY 2020. “The AK-12’s final design, shaped following its operational evaluation by troops, was featured at the Army 2020 forum,” according to the press office. “Now the Kalashnikov is producing this AK model already taking into account all improvements.”

The AK-12 is an assault rifle chambered in 5.45×39 millimeters, utilizing a revised and enhanced gas-operated piston system. The weapon features a standard magazine capacity of thirty rounds, weighs 3.5 kilograms while unloaded, and boasts a maximum sighting range of 800m. The AK-12’s final production version headlines all the features standard to modern rifles in its class, including an ergonomically shaped pistol grip, picatinny rail to accommodate a wide range of optics choices including sights and mounted lights, and a folding/adjustable buttstock for added handling benefits in vehicles, buildings, and other enclosed spaces.

If I had to travel in space and explore a Earth like planet, Id want an Ak chambered in 7.62x39 although here on Earth I like the AR-15 chambered in 5.56.

This is like saying 'the M-16 is dead, now we have the M-4'. Well, not really, since the M-4 is merely an evolution of the M-16. Likewise the AK-12 is merely the latest evolution of the AK-47.

I have one of about 10 legal full auto Ak74s in the USA.

I bought it super cheap ($750) decades ago.

It’s a heck of a lot of fun to shoot and appreciated a lot.

So, a product improved AK 74. Evolution, nor revolution.

Difference between the two are the calibers, the 74 is 5.45x39mm while the AK-47 is 7.62x39mm. Other than that the receivers are similar in design. The AK-12 receiver is definitely an AK variant receiver.

the thing i couldnt stand about the movie and this gun was they described the rounds as caseless, yet of course when they fired it there were cases ejected

also that it held 100 rifle rounds, plus several grenade rounds, would be pretty heavy to swing around so fast

i did love the idea of this gun though and how the prop designers creared it

AK74 is a good solid basic platform. Not as heavy as the 47. Ammo was once cheaper than dirty so I put in a lot of range time. The range master pointed out that I was pentatating my target and raising dust on the back stop berm.

Interesting they adopted the Picatinney rail standard.

Dumb, the Russians are not.

Probably 50 tuna cans of the heavy tungsten ammo.

No, while a definitive cousin, the 74 is a completely different rifle than the 47.

"Likewise the AK-12 is merely the latest evolution of the AK-47."

Hmmm...
I'm probably wrong, but the AK-47 is a beast killer whereas the AK-12 sounds more like a rabbit killer...

“If I had to travel in space and explore a Earth like planet, Id want an Ak chambered in 7.62x39 “

“Why? Because I know every time I pull the trigger it will go bang.”

Was that a Jack O’Conner quote? I can never quite remember who that is attributed to, but iirc it was him?
