Californians asked to cut power use as extreme heat approaches

(Reuters) -Californians were urged to ratchet down the use of electricity in their homes and businesses on Wednesday as a wave of extreme heat settles over much of the state, stretching tight power supplies to their breaking point.

Temperatures in the most populous state are forecast to climb to well above 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) during the afternoon.

The extreme conditions are the latest sign of the impact of climate change in the U.S. West, where wildfires and severe drought have emerged as a growing threat. As spells of excessive heat become more frequent, the strain on power and water utilities will become more acute, scientists say.

To prevent power outages, residents and businesses are asked to turn off lights and appliances and preset their thermostats to 78F (26C). Reducing usage is especially critical from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time (2300 to 0400 GMT), when demand across the state typically peaks and solar power generation begins to ebb.

Does the runoff help Lake Meade or Lake Powell?
I’m geographic ignorant about Arizona waterways.

Anything that goes through the roofing is an invitation for water leaks, so I’m totally not surprised.

I wonder if they regret all the money wasted on the Hi-speed train to nowhere that could have been spent on more powerplants and water infrastructure.

Who am I kidding, they consider the wasted money and lack of powerplants to be a feature, not a bug.

Do like Spain is doing. (Another TWSH). thermostats no lower than 80f in the summer and no higher than 66f in the winter. I wonder why our elect providers are pushing folks to receive “free” wireless ‘stats’. πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ˜΅πŸŽπŸ’©. Uh, NO.

The money for the high speed rail may not have been wasted (at least in Newsom’s view) if it went into the pockets of unionized Democrat voters...

You actually might be. There are honest conscientious scientists who think the next cooling may be at hand. Of course if it pans out in the next few years, the β€˜rats will take credit for it!

Yeah. They use a federal statute for the basis. What I’m talking about will come
Beyond its limits sometime soon. California does nothing to curb demand especially wrt illegals.

I dunno, but the area I’m in has multiple deep wells and they say there is enough water here for another 100+ years. Even with the growth.
