A new report by the environmental nonprofit Greenpeace released on Monday finds that the vast majority of plastic waste produced by U.S. households is not recycled.
Lisa Ramsden, a senior plastics campaigner at Greenpeace USA and one of the authors of the report, spoke with host Brad Mielke on ABC News’ “Start Here” podcast about the biggest takeaways from the report, the state of the recycling industry in the U.S. at large and what consumers should know about recycling.
START HERE: Can you describe this new report you guys have because it freaked me out. Like, am I not…should I not be…I can't recycle anything? What's going on?
LISA RAMSDEN: So, most plastic is not being recycled in the United States. American households produced about 51 million tons of plastic last year, and only 2.4 million of those tons were actually recycled.
START HERE: As in people are sending them to a recycling center and they're just not getting recycled?
RAMSDEN: Exactly. So there are many difficulties that come along with plastics recycling and people are sending these off to be recycled and then they are sitting in recycling facilities across the country not being recycled or they're being incinerated or sent to landfills instead.

Golly. I am so shocked.
well, niKcuF duh!
something like 13% of recyclables are recycled.
Giant scam...
The Australian version of 60 minutes had an expose’ of this years ago. Plastics being dumped on islands throughout Indonesia.
The science just needs to improve, I think.
The Green Scam
Recycling’s always been a racket and we’re the suckers always paying for it. They’ve been making us pay for recycling on every purchase with an ‘Redemption Value’ attached we make, then they don’t even do the recycling. They just pocket all that money.
They are years late with this observation.
By sending it in the regular garbage you cut out the middleman.
Fraud by fraudsters strikes again.
Gee... economists have been saying this for at least 30 years...
Why should I care what happens after the Recycle Bin is picked up? After all, my Virtue Signalling is completed at that point.
That's true. I've personally witnessed recycling trucks, at the local waste transfer station, emptying their loads into the same compacting pits used by the garbage trucks.
We quit recycling plastic and glass in 2014 when I was Public Works Director for a county and we operated the regional landfill.
Prior to that, the county had spent tens of thousands of dollars promoting recycling. The most they ever made back was about $1,500. There was never any profit in it.
In 2014 the bottom completely fell out of the recycling market, if there ever truly was one.
In my county, it’s a separate truck run (fuel and road & vehicle wear and tear) and they take less and less. Fundamentally, I think all you’re supposed to put in there is paper/cardboard, aluminum, and PET plastic. Glass is verboten.
If recycling made economic sense, people would be paying me for my garbage. So far, they’re not.

I see you are a realist about this silliness!
Recycling is just therapy for the weak minded and it’s working quite well. In other words, if they think it’s working, it is!
I’m 78...When I was a kid...we sold our bundled old newspapers to a dealer..and it paid pretty good. We gave lotsa stuff to the ragman with his horse and cart...and this was in a big city in the 50s.
