WNBA star Brittney Griner, freed this week in a high-level prisoner exchange, arrived at Brooke Army Medical Center early Friday for an evaluation.
How long the Houston native will remain at the San Antonio facility is unclear.
“The U.S. government is focused on ensuring that Brittney Griner and her family’s well-being are prioritized and that all available assistance be offered in an appropriate manner,” a State Department spokesman said. “Due to privacy reasons, we do not have anything additional to provide at this time.” Griner will stay at a military center that helps recently released prisoners of war and hostages transition back into society. The highly structured program — staffed by a battery of physicians, psychiatrists, physical therapists and other specialists — is designed to help patients overcome the debilitating effects of captivity and isolation.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist was freed from Russia on Thursday and flown to San Antonio as the White House announced her release in exchange for the notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
“She’s safe, she’s on a plane, she’s on her way home,” President Joe Biden said from the White House, where he was accompanied by Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, and administration officials.
