US can’t keep up with China’s warship building, Navy Secretary says

China’s navy has significant advantages over its US rival, including a bigger fleet and greater shipbuilding capacity, as Beijing seeks to project its power across the oceans, the head of the United States Navy said Tuesday.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said China “consistently attempts to violate the maritime sovereignty and economic well-being of other nations including our allies in the South China Sea and elsewhere.” They got a larger fleet now so they’re deploying that fleet globally,” he said, adding that Washington must upgrade the US fleet in response.

“We do need a larger Navy, we do need more ships in the future, more modern ships in the future, in particular that can meet that threat,” he said.

For Naval warfare these would have to be very long range, pretty fast drones. Which would make them pretty big, which would make them detectable and targetable at range. Drones don’t repeal physics.

This is one reason the old German Gepard AA vehicle is useful again, because it’s radar can target the long range Iranian drones.

“other than the economic strangle hold they have on us”

Yeah, that’s a myth. China is just as dependent on imports from the West as we are on exports from China. In fact, I think we’d fare much better in the event of a wartime trade stoppage than they would, since we can source the stuff they provide us from a number of alternatives, whereas if they lose our imports, they can’t replace them and they depend on those imports to run their manufacturing, so they would also have no more exports to sell to anyone else.

China has more itty bitty boats. The US Navy has more than double the tonnage of China’s.

Itty bitty ants overwhelm a large grasshopper.

Is China building a blue water navy? The last two attempts to compete with British and American dominance of the season were Wilhelm II and Brezhnev. The Battle of Jutland effectively ended the German challenge; shaky Soviet finances and Reagan’s buildup scuttled Russian hopes of a naval rivalry. That being said, no nation has fought a major naval war since 1945. The U.S. may win, but the major powers are moving into uncharted territory.

Have you ever tried to buy anything at a hardware store that isn’t made in China or maybe Taiwan? When was the last time you saw any item of clothing with the label, Made in the USA? Given the deterioration of our industrial base, we would be hard pressed to ramp up war production as we did in the two World Wars and the North did in the Civil War. Given what has been given away to Ukraine, we are now in a deficit in ammunition and arms. Do we have the machine tool capacity to rapidly increase firearms, airplane, and vehicle production?

I’m debilitated without my Chinese arthritis medicine. Know anyone who takes prescription medicine? Glad you slept through the last three years of the American economy being buffeted and hammered by Chinese supply delays. Cut it all off and we’d be great! That’s rich. I guess I just fell for that crazy MAGA line.

“China owns Biden and China will be coming completely for us when the stage has been set”.

And the Chinese will show us not one iota of mercy. They’ll be in for the kill.

It’s hilarious watching the LiberalTarians shift so easily from supporting Russia, to supporting China.

Appeasement punks. The Russia BS is just that, BS. As soon as that is over they will shift to appeasing China.

Our whole weapon system acquisition paradigm is a bag of crap.

Pretty sure it was designed by the KGB during McNamara's tenure. It's absolutely insane. The core competency of defense contractors is strategic incompetence because it maximizes profits for them.

China turned to build ships because Russia became her ally and China only land border thru which it can be invaded now friendly and peaceful.

Soviet commies were not in peace with China.

So now is a historical opportunity for China to become a world superpower. Second only to US. And China will grab it.

Our whole weapon system acquisition paradigm is a bag of crap. Everything costs too much, takes too long, and fails to meet requirements. But the Military-Industrial Complex makes big bucks, and that’s what counts.

Agree totally.

Due to Western sanctions and the ongoing proxy war in Europe DC has driven Putin into Xi’s arms. We’ve already blown our $200+ Billion down payment on a new multi trillion dollar, generational European arms race. An arms race that was totally unneeded in 2021. While we ensure the DC oligarchs get nickels laundered back on the trillions to be pi$$ed away, our existential enemy has yet to spend the first dime or fire the first bullet. Xi is swapping Chinese steel for Russian tanks and artillery tubes for highly discounted Russian oil as we speak. This continuing is the best case scenario. The more likely outcome is WWIII in Europe while Xi remains unscathed.

Ramping up our own production for stuff like that is one option, but the much more likely option is we would just source those kinds of goods from some other country with lots of available labor that will work for cheap, like we did before China was manufacturing all of that for us. And there is no shortage of those kinds of countries in the world. We might pay a few cents more, and have some supply chain problems, before everything in Walmart said “Made in Mexico”, “Made in Pakistan”, or “Made in Vietnam”, but that’s probably how it would go.

Demand drives supply and not the other way around. Yes, sure, if there is a trade interruption due to a war there would definitely be problems. But new suppliers would arise to fill the demand, because that’s how it works. That’s how it’s always worked since the beginning of time.

That’s rich! Since the beginning of time, except not at all the last three years. Man, surely you can do better than that hilarity.

Of course it’s happened that way the last three years as well. That’s how economies work. If there is a demand, supply will arise to fill it. This is Econ 101 stuff, so I’m not sure why anyone would want to try to argue it, unless they were a complete fool.
