The War Comes to Stanford

Alma Andino, a Jewish senior at Stanford University, spent the day of Hamas’s attacks against Israel crying and distraught. Like many Jews around the country, much of the weekend passed on the phone with family members, fearing for the safety of friends and extended family in Israel. Andino’s fellow students in Columbae, the social justice and antiwar residential house where she is a residential assistant, held her through her panic attacks. “I felt so powerless,” she recalled when we spoke this week.

On Monday, a friend asked if she’d seen the banner some of her housemates were preparing to hang on the front of Columbae, the house she considered to be her community and her home. The sheet bore the slogan “Zionism is genocide” in red letters, styled to look as if they were dripping with blood.

It would join other celebratory banners that had already gone up over the weekend on prominent university buildings around campus, including one that declared, “The illusion of Israel is burning.”

Palestinians took to the streets with dancing and cheers immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, recently recirculated footage shows.

The video was shared on Twitter earlier this week by Yair Netanyahu — the son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — where it has slowly gathered steam.

“The V sign for victory being displayed in East Jerusalem today among jubilant Palestinians that the United States had been subject to this attack,” reads then-Fox News anchor Brit Hume. “We’re seeing people applauding, clapping, smiling, happy to know that thousands of Americans have died in this sneak attack.”

During a less partisan era, it wasn’t just conservative media that picked up the story. CNN reported that Palestinian youths were praising Osama Bin Laden. On the “Today Show,” host Katie Couric also covered the scene.

“These are Palestinian celebrations in the wake of Tuesday’s terror attacks in the United States,” Couric said. “Palestinians took to the streets saying God is great. People were throwing candy and distributing candy to passers by.”

Nearly 20 years ago CNN reported that Palestinian youths were praising Osama Bin Laden.

This September will mark the 20th anniversary of when al Qaeda suicide terrorists under the command of Bin Laden used hijacked airplanes to destroy the World Trade Center and do serious damage to the Pentagon. A fourth plane recaptured by passengers crashed into a Pennsylvania field.

When it was over, 2,977 Americans were killed, making it the deadliest attack on US soil in American history.

MORE: That evening, only hours after Chabad, the Stanford Israel Association and the Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi held a vigil for those lost in the attacks, chalk messages were scrawled on the sidewalks where they had stood: “No peace on stolen land.” “Long live the intifada.” “From the river to the sea.” “Resistance to occupation is legal, collective punishment is not.”

Those messages remained, untouched, throughout the following day.

On Wednesday evening, Students for Justice in Palestine convened a Palestine Teach-In with over 200 students. A number of students spoke about legitimate Palestinian grievances and tragedies. But in a recording of the event that I listened to, the biggest applause line was for a woman who said her family was in Gaza. “You ask us, do we condemn Hamas?” she said, and cursed. “Stop asking all these questions,” she went on. “I’m so proud of my resistance.”

Stanford’s administration had given students little reason to think twice before defending mass murder. On Monday, Richard Saller, Stanford’s interim president, and Jenny Martinez, its provost, issued a brief statement “on the Middle East conflict” noting they were “deeply saddened and horrified by the death and human suffering.” The university also issued a statement saying the pro-Hamas banners were fine but would need to be relocated to another part of campus. “These removals are based on the location of the banners, not the content or viewpoint expressed,” the university made clear.

It seems that Andino’s mistake is living in a SOCIAL JUSTICE and ANTIWAR house.

There are no innocent Gaza civilians. Bomb the candy factories and stores. Israeli girls bodies were paraded in Gaza while Gaza children spit on the bodies and hit them with sticks. This is not fiction, and it is barbarism. They hate all non-muslims, calling them infidels; so we should do them in... before they kill us.

I am not Jewish, but I am horrified by it. Of course, I wouldn't like it if Jews were doing the same thing to Arabs. But I've never seen that happen. Responding to an attack is not the same thing is killing a whole bunch of people who are provoked. And how do you know how to be "proportional" when someone is trying to exterminate you? It's not like Hamas plays by the Marquis of Queensbury rules, do they?

There's a quite by Golda Meir, you can make of it what you will:

When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons.

These people have been fine cheering on campus leftism for decades, as long as it was about destroying America and the West.

But now that it has turned on Sainted Israel, they are all tearful and distraught.

They bought the ticket! They should enjoy the ride !

In recent decades, as Israel's security seemed assured, a major split developed among American Jews and often played out as generational change.

For example, close friends of many years, a married couple who are conservative and observant Jews, felt rising dismay as their three daughters -- now intelligent and well-educated adults -- became Leftists. The gravitational Leftward pull of contemporary education and liberal American Judaism overcame parental influence.

Now the three daughters (and many other Leftist American Jews) are in distress at the hard realities of Israel's existence and the fierce hatred of Jews by hundreds of millions of Muslims -- including many America Muslims. Beyond doubt, the lesson of events will shift Jewish politics to the Right. American Jews will have much to talk about during the holidays.

Ridiculous. I hope Ms Andino has seen through the hypocrisy of her housemates.

We heard some of this with the 2014 Third Intifada and then the 2015-2016 Lone Wolf Intifada. Jews were attacked and then given an unsympathetic response by Western leftists.

But it quickly faded, and they went back to the same campus leftism (in fact more Woke than ever).

I am old enough to have experienced the 1973 Yom Kippur War as a college student on a campus with a large Jewish contingent. The current war against Hamas seems likely to be close to it in psychological and political impact on American Jews. As in 1973, they are finding that their supposed friends on the Left are not really their friends. That shock in 1973 and domestic issues of crime and urban decay helped to propel many liberals and Jews to the right. That was the original meaning of neocon.

This was my point. That it didn’t have any lasting effect on voting patterns.

The NeoCons may have been intellectually prominent, but they didn’t represent significant numbers.

The numbers as to Jewish support for GOP presidential candidates are the product of political circumstances and events that deserve consideration in detail.

Chastened by the fecklessness of the Jimmy Carter administration, the original neocons -- both Jewish and Christian -- made considerable contributions toward the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and the formulation of his policies in office. They then supported Reagan in his massive reelection victory in 1984.

Having had a Hollywood career, two terms as California Governor, and many Jewish friends, Reagan understood and was sympathetic to the Jewish community and their concerns. More than that, behind Reagan's disarming and sunny manner was a keen and disciplined political sense and a full grasp of conservative ideas and American political history.

After the 1988 election, George H. W. Bush and his Secretary of State, James Baker, tilted toward the Arabs and against Israel. Bush, a former oil man, and Baker, a prominent lawyer for the Texas oil industry, naturally aligned with Arab concerns and looked for a deal that would lead to Mid East peace. Most notably, in spite of terrorism by Palestinians, Bush and Baker opened negotiations with them and pressed Israel to make concessions.

In response to criticism from Israel and American Jews, Baker banned Israel's then deputy foreign minister -- Bibi Netanyahu -- from entering the US State Department. Baker was reputed to have even said in a 1992 Oval Office meeting "F*ck the Jews. They didn't vote for us." Even decades later, hostility to Baker by American Jewish leaders was one of the marks against Jeb Bush's failed campaign for President in 2016.

Going forward, in spite of the opening that current events offer, it will not be enough for Republicans to passively wait for American Jews to support them. Republican leaders and candidates have to respect and work hard to understand Jews and address their issues. Trump, as a New Yorker with a Jewish son-in-law and grandchildren being raised as Jews get that. His rivals in the GOP much less so.
