WATCH: Blinken Plays ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ in Kyiv Bar

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken performed Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” on the electric guitar on Tuesday night in Kyiv, Ukraine, as part of a solidarity visit to boost morale in the embattled former Soviet republic.

Blinken played rhythm guitar with The 1999 band at the Barman Dictat, a nightspot in the Ukrainian capital.

“I know this is a really, really difficult time,” Blinken said. “You need to know the United States is with you.”

Maybe he should sing Back in the USSR. They’re winning, you know, in spite of the billions we continue to waste on Ukraine.

To be fair, his guitar playing is ok.

He picked a song so simple that even he couldn't screw it up. But his guitar playing, which can be charitably described as "lifelong beginner", is the least of the problem.

He didn't just happen upon that bar and get pulled on stage to play along with the band because he is so awesome. A band with three right-handed guitar players don't keep a left-handed guitar plugged in on stage "just in case Secretary Blinken is in town."

He asked to play, he probably brought his guitar with him on the diplomatic flight, he pushed his staff and the Ukraine foreign ministry to set up the scene for him, it accomplished nothing diplomatically... or musically, and all just to get some cheap applause to stroke his ego.

Exactly right, and he’s an amateur, and that band was lousy. No ‘feel’ whatsoever and the tempo was too slow. That song dies unless it’s driven hard.

This guy is in the wrong business. He should have been in show business, even looks like the actor Tim Robbins. People are dying in mass everywhere, and his solution is... singing Neil Young... to lighten things up. Yeah, that’s like Nixon sending Henry Kissinger into Vietnam to perform Frank Sinatra in a dingy corner bar in Saigon. Or it’s like sending in Marlene Dietrich to Berlin to cheer up the Führer in 1945 — “a little parting number to remember me with, darling.”

It’s too freakin weird.

However, if Blinken wasn’t just blinking crazy and worth his weight as an artist, he should change the lyrics of the last verse. For example:

“We got a thousand points of light
For the Ukraine man
We got a kinder, gentler machine gun hand
We’ve got Cruise missile and Patriots too
Got high-tech generals that know what to do
Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn, got tanks to drive”

That way it’s more relevant. But still, what a retarded thing to do.

I’m a vocalist and his singing made me cringe.

His guitar playing looked mediocre. The lead guitarist was decent while Blinky appeared to play about three chords in the rhythm spot.

There's a cspan video of the band leading up to this ego stroking performance, the band is playing much differebt music and while it's not my cup of tea, they are skilled and tight as performers. It's not the band's fault, they probably don't speak much English and I wouldn't be surprised if they never heard the song before that day.

Blinken and BIden have dribbled aid to Ukraine and restricted NATO aid to Zalensky, and in doing so they have prolonged the war for their own domestic profit, and the profit of their party donors, the ordnance industry of the USA.
