VEEP Stakes: Vance challenges Scott for top spot on Trump shortlist
The HIll ^ | 05/15/24 6:00 AM ET | BY ALEXANDER BOLTON

Sen. JD Vance’s (R-Ohio) surprise appearance at a Manhattan courthouse to support former President Trump, and his qualified answer about supporting the results of the 2024 election, show he’s challenging Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as the Senate front-runner to be Trump’s running mate in the fall.

GOP senators and strategists say it’s hard to predict whom Trump will choose, but they say Scott and Vance are viewed as the two most likely choices within the Senate GOP conference.

Vance and Scott are stepping up their efforts to grab Trump’s attention by staying close to his orbit and showing off their skills and loyalty.

Vance showed up Monday in Lower Manhattan to rip District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) prosecution of Trump as politically motivated and pan the judge’s handling of the trial as a “disgrace.”

He told Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Tuesday that he was there “to support a friend,” calling it a “very depressing way to spend five, six weeks of your life when you know that you’re innocent.”

He will also attend an intimate, high-dollar fundraiser with Trump in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Guests are being asked to contribute $50,000 per person to a joint fundraising committee for the occasion.

He’s made an impression in a short time in the Senate (not easy) he’s honorable and conservative

What’s not to like...

Also: I dont think he’s arrogant enough to think he’s coronated as the next nominee.

I wish him well...

The ONLY criteria that matters is: Does the VP choice help bring in more votes?

JDV - no
Burgum - no
Scott - maybe

VP choices that will bring in MORE votes:

Sarah Sanders
Tulsi
Vivek
Stefanik
Donalds

If we don’t win the election in November, it doesn’t matter about the VP’s ideology, administrative expertise, or grooming them for 2028.

If it were up to me, my choice would be Josh Hawley of Missouri.

Telegenic, quick-witted, intelligent, good speaker.

Demographically, I’m not sure he’d do a lot for the ticket though. Missouri is a safe GOP state and he doesn’t do anything to appeal to certain groups.

But picture Hawley in a debate with Kamala Harris. He’d pick her apart.

Flame away but he should pick Tulsi. She helps the ticket more than anyone l can think of especially with the blasted women vote. If Trump does not win it’s over folks.

I’m sorry, but picking a SITTING Republican Senator is a STUPID STUPID idea.

There is NO GURANTEE that the replacement will be a Republican. We need EVERY seat in the House and Senate.

That said, unless the Dems are planning on knocking Trump off after say the first year, a “politician” may be a good choice in that case.

However, I believe the VP should be a vicious attack dog. Turn the VP loose on ALL the Dems from day one. No Quarter, No Mercy!! This will have the Dems bending over backwards to protect Trump since the VP becoming POTUS will be worse.

Scott is a doofus.

If Trump picks him, he’s pandering.

Also, Scott STRONGLY endorsed and supported Lisa Murkowski, Dianne Feinstein’s BFF, and Trump hater.

I agree with your sentiment about getting more votes, but I think Trump is the exception here. He was the most popular man to ever run for president in 2016, is running for a 3rd time. There is nothing else to know about the guy, I cannot imagine someone would change their vote or decide to vote for him because of a running mate. There are always some but not enough to make a difference, especially with Trump and this election.
Also agree if we don’t win then 2028 won’t matter, but Trump has to do this himself and the follow up, the VP has to be able to carry on. The left can weather a Trump storm for 4 more years as they did the last time and still unravel everything accomplished.

I guess different people have different criteria as to how to choose a running mate.

Agree, a key criterion should be, will a running mate attract new voters , and attract more support to the ticket.

But then some people bring up issues about having an attack dog running mate, and who’s going to carry MAGA forward in 2028 and beyond, and how certain prospective running mates are too liberal or RINO , and then the picture gets muddled.

Trump may surprise us all and pick someone that nobody is talking about right now.

I like Byron Donald ( spelled wrong I know). He has the grit and smarts to be more effective than Traitor Pence.
