VEEP Stakes: Vance challenges Scott for top spot on Trump shortlist
The HIll ^ | 05/15/24 6:00 AM ET | BY ALEXANDER BOLTON

Sen. JD Vance’s (R-Ohio) surprise appearance at a Manhattan courthouse to support former President Trump, and his qualified answer about supporting the results of the 2024 election, show he’s challenging Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as the Senate front-runner to be Trump’s running mate in the fall.

GOP senators and strategists say it’s hard to predict whom Trump will choose, but they say Scott and Vance are viewed as the two most likely choices within the Senate GOP conference.

Vance and Scott are stepping up their efforts to grab Trump’s attention by staying close to his orbit and showing off their skills and loyalty.

Vance showed up Monday in Lower Manhattan to rip District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) prosecution of Trump as politically motivated and pan the judge’s handling of the trial as a “disgrace.”

He told Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Tuesday that he was there “to support a friend,” calling it a “very depressing way to spend five, six weeks of your life when you know that you’re innocent.”

He will also attend an intimate, high-dollar fundraiser with Trump in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Guests are being asked to contribute $50,000 per person to a joint fundraising committee for the occasion.

Vance is not a traditional conservative, and will further alienate the base the Trump is going to need to win.

Vance has a different view of economics that the old school GOP. More in line with Trump.

I like this pick, but there are negatives in what will be a razor thin election at best.

You are correct, Reps are pitching with no bullpen. All we have is RINO meat on the hoof. Any decent person would be afraid to wade into this political mess we are in.

Tim Scott is a very poor choice, if you want someone who can think and support the right stuff.

Didn’t Tim Scott ENCOURAGE the Trump impeachments, saying it was best to get the question reviewed and decided?

The guy is missing a brain.

Missing a brain is a minor problem in the politics today.

Keep Vance in the Senate and a big NO on Tim Scott (U) SC.
My pics are Elise Stefanik, Ric Grenell, or Lee Zeldin. I'd be good with Ben Carson as well.

Whatever Trumo does he has to remember it is not a GOP primary nod he is now running for; it’s a general election where the victory margin in some important states is going to be thin, meaning his appeal will have to grow wider than the GOP base.

I agree. The person needs executive experience to be sure he or she is capable of leading the nation if called upon to do so. But a non-politician would be a pleasant change for VP.

I think Trump needed a political VP in 2016 because no one was truly certain how he would govern. But he is a known quantity now. The few great candidates who are politicians are also currently needed where they are.

I like Tulsi as well. She would be a strong female counterpoint to giggling Kamala.

>>Would you want Governor DeWine picking his replacement and putting the seat in jeopardy in the next statewide election?<<

Making it a DeWine's super-RINO pick??? No way!!!

I like Vance, but I wonder about Tommy Tuberville, Senator from Alabama. He was with President Trump last night, don’t know much about him.

A president who would be over 80 in 2028 should probably not have a vp who would be mid 70s then. Unless the idea is to leave the unpredictable fight over a successor to be fought out in ‘28.
