NEW: Consumer Price Index Inflation 3.4% in April, Core CPI Up 3.6%
Hot Air ^ | May 15, 2024

Posted on 05/15/2024 7:23:21 AM PDT by george76

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in April on a seasonally adjusted basis, after rising 0.4 percent in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.4 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Advertisement The index for shelter rose in April, as did the index for gasoline. Combined, these two indexes contributed over seventy percent of the monthly increase in the index for all items. The energy index rose 1.1 percent over the month. The food index was unchanged in April. The food at home index declined 0.2 percent, while the food away from home index rose 0.3 percent over the month.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 percent in April, after rising 0.4 percent in each of the 3 preceding months. Indexes which increased in April include shelter, motor vehicle insurance, medical care, apparel, and personal care. The indexes for used cars and trucks, household furnishings and operations, and new vehicles were among those that decreased over the month.

The all items index rose 3.4 percent for the 12 months ending April, a smaller increase than the 3.5-percent increase for the 12 months ending March. The all items less food and energy index rose 3.6 percent over the last 12 months. The energy index increased 2.6 percent for the 12 months ending April. The food index increased 2.2 percent over the last year.

...

Core CPI -- excluding foot and energy -- rose higher at a 3.6% annualized rate.

Some of the categories have eye-popping results (annualized), though:

Food away from home: 4.1%.

Electricity: 5.1%.

Shelter: 5.5%.

Transportation services: 11.2%.

Food away from home may become a luxury again, and transportation services too, but electricity and shelter are unavoidable costs for American households. Inflation is far from over for the working and middle classes.

>Our standard of living is being engineered down and we’re not supposed to notice.

I mean, as the (D) & (R)N(C) KEEP voting in the SAME, time & time again, it appears the People don’t care (or they’d be changing their voting habits) *shrug*

“Most important election E-V-E-R”...again *rolls eyes*

Prices are up at least 10% in my area, maybe 15% - across the board. Where they get these numbers is a total mystery.

Someone needs to tell Joe that any sentence with the word “inflation” in it means prices are going up.

How about a little “deflation” for several months?

Tell me that 3.6% is for April and I'll believe it.

Tell me it's annualized and [further comment withheld because of language].

>Why have taxes, just print money. ~liberals.

Actually, semi-CORRECT.

Only MINTING is authorized via A1S10 (gold/silver). Esp. as govt CAN borrow all it ‘needs’.

It’s the ILLEGAL/extra-Constitutional SPENDING that’s the problem

People only think it’s that bad. Biden corrected Erin Burnett for saying the inflation was 1.4% when Trump left. She tried using those “fact” things. He can set us all straight now.

Bidenomics is in full force and there is nothing to worry about. “People have more money now to pay for things with the higher prices.”

CBS radio calls it “rose less than expected.”

Local Phnx FOX TV called inflation. “cooling.”

Consumers know better.

Everyone is complaining about car insurance rates. Just got my bill. Up 16%. No claims. Go figure. Biden can’t. Says we got $$ to spend.

Core CPI -- excluding foot and energy

Well, after you have to pay an arm and a leg, you've lost your foot.
