The $135BN cost of food stamps and their "culture of dependency"
The Daily Mail ^ | 15 May 2024 | James Reinl

Steve Moore, from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, a free market think tank, says Democrats were to blame for refusing 'to mandate work for welfare.' They 'view food stamps as an economic stimulus and/or virtuous income redistribution,' he said. Meanwhile, the scheme is increasingly targeted by fraudsters. A New York Times investigation spotlighted the scammers who use illegally installed skimming machines to lift payment card data from beneficiaries who swipe their SNAP cards through the devices in stores or at ATMs. Skimming cons picked up in 2022, and that the federal government has spent at least $30 million reimbursing stolen benefits in the past year.

Boxes of beans
Boxes of cheese
Boxes of powdered milk

Handed out monthly, and your monthly allotment should be maximized for a married couple with 1 child. The household allotment should get smaller with each additional family member.

I get your point but why should the children of irresponsible parents have to go hungry? By all means, boxes of beans, cheese, powdered milk, rice, bread, peanut butter, and maybe dried fruit. Enough to feed everyone in the family. If they don’t like it, that’s on them.

What gets me is that Food Stamps/SNAP are allotted to feed the whole family for a month. But the kids get free breakfasts and lunches at school during the school year and everyone who looks to be under 18 gets a free meal during the summer. These extra meals are not deducted from the SNAP allotment. And now many school districts provide ‘backpacks’ of food so kids don’t go hungry over the weekends.

Many recipients have figured ways to trade their SNAP benefits for things that SNAP won’t pay for: alcohol, drugs, and smokes.

It’s our own internal Ukraine. At $165 billion, it’s the cheaper version.

One time I was in line behind a woman buying her groceries with food stamps. I saw her afterwards in the parking lot loading up her car. It was 5 years newer than mine.

Food Stamps is a vote-buying scheme.

It's named "Farm Bill" because food stamps are a farm subsidy, always have been.

Side note:
I would rather subsidize food production than Elon Musk and other leeches receiving government/taxpayer largess..

I saw a young woman get out of her brand new BMW, parking in a disabled place, she was in her workout tights...looked good.

She ended up in front of me at checkout and pulled out her EBT card...

The other night I watched two different men walk of the store with groceries without paying

And just the night before that, a woman came out of the store with a grocery cart full, walked over to the crate of watermelons and put three in her car..no payment and right in front of her very young daughter.

Cops can’t do a thing about it

Rice and beans only. Complete protein. Thjat’s all they need. It would cure the obesity problem.

As an all-organic paleo diet person, who is also Hispanic, I know that rice and beans are not “complete protein’ and will not cure obesity if they are your main menu items. If you disbelieve, just look at the low income Hispanics who have made rice and beans a daily thing-most are really overweight...

White rice is a starchy food that is heavy carb and empty calories-white rice is known to contribute to type 2 diabetes, too-not recommended for those with that problem. Brown rice is much better and has lots of useful nutrients and fiber, but it is still starch-almost no protein. Lots of rice is eaten by athletes who need a lot of extra weight for competitions, etc-so no, it will not cure obesity.

Beans have plenty of protein and fiber, but they lack the nutrients of other veggies-the human body needs all those nutrients, so you need a varied diet with more protein and veggies. I’m all for food stamps only being used for fresh veggies-the kind you cook-no cans, no frozen, no deli crap-and beans, brown rice, etc that has to be cooked as well -and only fresh meat and fish-no pre-cooked. the only dairy allowed would be milk for little kids (older kids and adults do not need milk-cheese and yogurt are better)-yogurt, butter, real cheese (not the fake slices or velveeta pretend cheese), and no carb heavy white bread-and of course no soda, ice cream, candy or fast food items-if someone wants that stuff they can spend their own money-not the taxpayers’.

If the welfare crowd has to buy and cook healthy food, they will either lose weight and get healthy-less medicaid use-or they will go get a damn job so they can afford to eat garbage and be fat and unhealthy...

Too much information. Ok-so give them brown rice.

Bottom line: Will they starve on this diet?

If they can’t understand the simple English the info is written in, then they’d better learn to read and buy the approved stuff-and learn to cook, too-otherwise, they don’t eat-that works for me. And no, they won’t starve if they just eat rice and beans-they will just continue to be be obese, unhealthy and spend more and more of OUR tax money for medicaid. If they eat the healthy diet, they will be fit for work-no more excuses not to get a damn job-pay for your own food and housing, like the rest of us...

I want the welfare-to-work program back-if they want to be obese, do drugs, act like a lunatic, that is fine with me-not my business-but they need to do all that on their own dime, not ours...

The SNAP recipients I know are elderly, disabled, or both. The program is a lifeline for them.

Too bad that systemic fraud is rampant, because it turns people away from understanding the need for public assistance. Limited public assistance - is a workable idea, providing the rules are followed and enforced.

In MA, the majority of SNAP users these days are Asian, Hispanic, black, then Russian, in that order. The Asians have the process down to a science, the Indians (who I did not list) sometimes have several thousand on their SNAP balance. Overwhelmingly, we see bad behavior from the Asians (Chinese) who are buying and reselling to a restaurant or some place (literally buying $40 in garlic or beans), the Russians and Albanians are just mean but I do not get the feeling they are scamming the system, we do not see many American born elderly :(

Having been on welfare and food stamps I can tell you its evil and takes the last shred of dignity from a person. They become humbled and angry. When poor, they at least had self respect—Food stamps made them dependent upon the system. It is an evil system and should be banned. Jobs not free stuff! Have people work for the food or pay them. This would give people self respect.

It’s also a giant grift for the the financial institutions that process the payments.
