ABC's Ted Koppel "stunned" by Cohen's mention of "nuclear" as possible response to WTC attack
ABC News ^ | 9/12/01 | ABC Live Coverage

Posted on 09/12/2001 6:15:00 AM PDT by ppaul

About 5:50 am Pacific, ABC's Ted Koppel was being interviewed. He was in London. It was mentioned that before Koppel became famous for Nightline, he served as a correspondent covering the U.S. State Department. Koppel said he had been watching the ABC coverage this morning for a "couple of hours" and that he was "stunned" when he saw the interview early this morning of former Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, and Cohen mentioned the use of nuclear weapons among the list of possible responses to yesterday's terrorist attack. Koppel said it was the first time he ever recalls any high level person mentioning nuclear weapons as even a possibility.

Cohen was also on the tube yesterday ( CNN ? )laying out the case for greater security at the expense of our traditions of liberty and freedom.

Would you expect anything different from him? Typical jargong, America gets attacked so lets strip away the Liberties of America to punish the persons responsable for the act! Typical Liberal thinking and tactic.

I agree. You destroy one of our cities, we take our 5 of yours. And with about 400 years of radiation, that will quickly eliminate potential sites for terrorist camps. And if you think for one minute that Iran and Syria would harbor terrorists after that, you forget that even a lunatic has a pragmatic response when necessary. In an earlier post I advocated the use of F-117's for delivering nukes. I'm sorry, that was igorant. It's cheaper and quicker to use SLCM's with small nuclear warheads. And piss on what the rest of the world thinks about it, especially the towel heads.

Remember the much-maligned "Neutron Bomb", developed to counter the threat of massed Soviet armor in Western Europe- WITHOUT making the target area too radioactive to occupy? At the time, it was dismissed by the peace freaks with pony tails and earrings as "a bomb that killed people, but left buildings standing".

Doesn't that sound like it could be useful, right about now??

I saw Stepho last night as well, right after the President spoke. Whether or not (I choose not) you like his political leanings, he is an astute spin doctor, and he was HIGHLY complimentary of President Bush's tone and topic coverage. Also, Jennings floored me by repeating the portion of the 23rd Psalm used by Pres Bush and indicating that it was the most appropriate comforting words he could think of for America ... In short: we have the right people in place to handle this situation moving forward ... we should be proud of our executive team and supportive, they will need our prayers in the days and weeks to come.

Did you notice how CNN paraded one Clinton aide after another? Was no one else available or are they just again showing their bias?

Hey, this morning on ABC they even had ol' Slick Willie himself -
live from some tropical paradise where he's hangin', all tanned with snowy locks and all!

Yeah, the "mob" that probably got us into this mess.

Not the ones that got us into it but the ones who have ignored it and failed to respond in the only way that the radical Nation of Islam understands, WHACK EM and WHACK them HARD!

I agree, a nuclear response would not be unwarranted. Look at the scale of the devastation in NYC alone. Thousands of lives, billions of dollars, and probably the kinds of fiery suffering deaths that would have come from a nuclear detonation. What occurred yesterday, even though it was only a few commercial airplanes, was an attack with weapons of mass destruction, and it should be treated as such. The terrorists were very aware of the scope of their destruction. This is war. I say erase one scumbag country, and the rest will have renewed attention. There must be a heavy price paid. We will never be able to surgically take out only the "guilty parties". I'm ready to kick ass and chew gum, and I'm all out of gum.

Gee, for the first time in this forum, I think I may agree with you.

"I sure as hell hope nuclear weapons are being considered. It would be an appropriate response to reduce Kabul, and all other capitals of terrosist sposoring states, to glowing basketball courts."

I have to agree.
Tough decision, yes, very tough decision but..

.when all our airports are re-opened - which cities buildings might be next!!

"CNN paraded one Clinton flack after another..."

That is probably because the people in positions of resposibilty in the Bush Administration, unlike the members of the Clinton criminal conspiracy, save their opinions for their boss. They tend not to be found blathering on foolishly on worthless TV shows.

Your name reflects just exactly why you should leave military action to others. These people must be placed in a position where they can't hide. End of story!

Cohen was S-O-D under Clinton wasn't he? Nothing said by any former Clinton flack is credible.

Yeah, Sandy Berger was saying yesterday how we needed to proceed carefully and how "the facts" are so important. Not false, in and of itself, but odd on the lips of Sandy Berger.

And why does Fox have these j-roots on? I don't need to see Bill Richardson in my life ever again. I don't need to hear one syllable that he utters. Traitors.

If we still have a neutron bomb (French may have one)....that's the ticket.

Much better for the Global warming problem

We may have the bigest guns, but we don't have the only guns...the bastards have many weapons of mass destruction...else they would not have been so bold.

Which makes you wonder if the next such terrorist attack may involve smuggling a small, tactical nuke into an American city. Maybe then, we won't hear quite so much from the touchy-feely, compassion-tolerance crowd. Hell, if we're lucky, they'll be at ground zero.

Food for thought. And while we're on the subject, I hope GWB runs that photo of Hillary schmoozing with Arafat's wife 24-hours a day.

Nuclear makes sense for the land locked mountainious Afgan, nuke'em and forget'em. But for the gulf states, I think taking thier country away via troops on the ground is better. Kill all males over the age of 12, make slaves of the females, level every building and then salt the earth so nothing will grow for a 100 years.

If Jimmy (wimp) Charter had dealt effectively with Iran (something like I out lined) we would not be in this mess today. If Islam wants a holy war with the USA, I say we give them one.
