‘Mafiya’ tried to sell Laden weapons

The man Hungarian police and intelligence agencies accused of laundering more than $500 million in the Bank of New York scandal, may have tried to sell weapons to terrorist groups including Osama bin Laden’s Al-Queda (the Base) while based in Budapest in the 1990s.

News reports began to surface last week that the enigmatic leader of the Red Mafiya, allegedly 54-year-old Ukrainian-born Semion Mogilevich, had made attempts to sell weapons to bin Laden’s group but, for unknown reasons, did not actually succeed in striking a deal.

As The Budapest Sun has reported, one of bin Laden’s brothers once operated a business in Hungary around the same time, although there is no clear information that the brother was acting as a front for a potential business deal.

Fell through

Hungary’s National Security Minister Ervin Demeter confirmed reports about a possible business deal, but claimed the deal fell through and offered no other relevant details.

Hundreds of pages of classified FBI, British and Israeli intelligence documents, collected by New York journalist Robert I Friedman in his book The Red Mafiya, described Mogilevich as a malevolent figure who had become a grave threat to the stability of Israel, Eastern Europe and North America.

In 1991, Mogilevich married Katalin Papp, a Hungarian national, allowing him to legally reside in Budapest, where he moved and, Friedman alleged, began to build the foundations of his "global criminal empire".

Mogilevich had set his sights on the arms industry prior to Hungary joining NATO in 1999.

He had already sold $20 million worth of pilfered Warsaw Pact weapons, including ground-to-air missiles and 12 armored troop carriers to Iran, according to classified Israeli and FBI documents and a top-level US Customs official.

"However, to the even greater consternation of international law enforcement officials, Mogilevich began to legally purchase virtually the entire armaments industry, jeopardizing regional security, NATO, and the war against terrorism," Friedman said.

He had a hard time convincing Laden that a 30mm cannon couldn't be fixed to a one-hump camel :)

I don't know about this "Debka" outfit. Some like it some say it's nothing but rumors.

In a special investigation,DEBKA-Net-Weekly learned from well-placed intelligence sources that the millionaire terror master did procure a supply of uranium-235 six months before his Al Qaeda suicides carried out their September 11 strikes in America. The uranium was delivered following an extraordinary deal between the most wanted terrorist in the world and one of the world's most dangerous mobsters, a shadowy Ukrainian-born Jew called Semion Mogilevich, who rules over an arms-trafficking, money-laundering, drug-running, prostitution and graft empire.

Sources who spoke to DEBKA-Net-Weekly on condition of anonymity report that for a princely sum estimated at US$40 - 75 million, Bin Laden bought between 12 and 15 kilos of uranium-235, all of which came from Russia or some Central Asian Muslim republic.

If this is true, the master terrorist has enough fissionable material to build between 3 and 5 nuclear devices.

'Al Qaida tried to buy nuclear material from Russian mafia'

By Arun Mohanty, Indo-Asian News Service

Moscow, Oct 16 (IANS) Terrorist suspect Osama bin Laden's group Al Qaida has tried to buy nuclear material through the Russian mafia, reports here said.

Al Qaida had made several attempts to procure nuclear material for military purpose from Russian mafia, Russian news agency Interfax reports.

For this purpose bin Laden had reportedly established contacts with representatives of Russian organised criminal gangs in Germany, Belarus and Russia.

"A German state-run TV company will reveal this in its popular evening programme 'Report,'" Interfax said quoting the news agency EFE.

American and European specialists are trying to trace contacts made by Al Qaida financial director Makhmud Salim in this connection.

Salim has been in a German prison since 1998.

Al Qaida member Jamal Ahmed Fadl had also confirmed that the group was trying to buy nuclear material from the Russian mafia early this year.

Fadl reportedly said he, on bin Laden's behest, had established contact with the representatives of Russian organised crime for procuring nuclear material.

In the chaotic years that followed Soviet collapse, Russian mafia, which has its tentacles in different industrial branches, was reported to have control over many nuclear installations
