One the things he always tried to impress upon me was how fortunate we were to be Americans.

so, put that in there.

condolences, prayers, and thanks to your grandfather for his service to our country.

You know, it might have meant much more than you realize that he died on the day he did. My grandmother died on her 95th birthday. My mother-in-law died a day after a couple of birthdays in the family had passed. I think sometimes the time of passing is by design. Maybe 91B's grandfather would have liked to have note made of his love of country and commitment to America. What a guy!

I will. When I was little he used to take me over to the VA in Johnson City, TN and we would go back to the cemetery. I always thought he was just letting me play on the old artillery piece back there but I think he was trying to impress upon me something that he didn't know just how to articulate.

There has been a reluctance for some time to refrain from emotional, personal revelations in obituaries. (just the facts, ma'am). Those people that care want more than the bare bone statements; some sense of the person should endure, in print, through the ages.
