10 Popular Games Criticized for Gun Violence
12/14/2001

Ten games on the wish list of many children this holiday season are being criticized for their violent content, Channel 2000 reported Dec. 13.

The Americans for Gun Safety Foundation warned that the popular video games include realistic-looking guns and involve shooting, killing, and maiming people.

"This holiday season, when many parents are buying video games as gifts for their children, it is important for them to be aware of the dangers associated with some of these games," said Jonathan Cowan, president of the foundation. "For parents who own guns, these games take all of the lessons that they teach their children about gun safety and throw them out the window."

Although the games carry a warning on the box, the report found the rating did not prevent young children from buying or gaining access to the games. Many of the games are played on computer CD-ROM or on home gaming systems.

The games criticized by the foundation include: "Redneck Rampage," "Hitman," "Max Payne," "Half-Life: Counter Strike," "Soldier Of Fortune," "No One Lives Forever," "Gangsters 2," "Doom II," "007: Agent Under Fire," and "Delta Force: Land Warrior."

But the foundation applauded games with nonhuman victims that promote safe gun use, such as "Remington Upland Game Hunter" and "Browning Duck Hunter."

Redneck Rampage? Bwhahaahah. I have that. Good one liners. Beer heals you as well in that game, as does whisky.

Doom II is a old time classic.

I haven't played Max Payne. I think I'm going to install the demo for it now since AGS hates it. I think I have it somewhere.

And no mention of Duke Nukem 3D? BTW - When is Duke Nukem Forever finally coming out???

Hitman and Counterstrike are both awesome, though I haven't played any of the other titles.

Well, personally, Dan, I won't be buying my kids any realistic game that involves shooting at simulated humans unless it's quite clear they're "perps," and perhaps not even then.

Not being familiar with all these games, I don't know which do and don't fit into this category.

But have you visited the bin Laden Liquor store? They've got an episode II now!

Ghost Recon is a good game. Ultranationalist Soviet types are the bad guys.

Doom, Doom II, and Quake are some of my favorite games along with the entire Duke Nukem series even the ones that were really a younger child’s game that they made before they released Doom and the guy who wanted them to stay PG left. They left off American McGee's Alice who does everyone in with toys and a knife.

LOL, silly freaks.

I strongly recommend No One Lives Forever. It combines hilarious 60's Austin Powers-like spy parodies with great action.

And if you have a Playstation 2, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is always a great choice.

Not Silent Scope, where the player assassinates targets? They're slipping. /sarcasm

What, no Quake? Clearly they have never seen giblets flying out the teleporter. Or they got their a$$es kicked in deathmatch. Posers.

I dunno - I think all these games are fine, for well-adjusted adults. In fact, I own a couple myself. But my kids don't play them, or watch me play them.

I don't think it's unreasonable to keep them out of the hands of children. I firmly believe it is the ubiquity of violent images in entertainment media which has led to the problems of gun violence which the gun grabbers then blame on legal gun ownership.

I'd rather we restrict violent games to adults, instead of placing further restrictions on gun ownership.

P.S. Yobe svoyu - deshevle budet! ;-)

Greetings from the north amigo! I'm also surprised that 007 Goldeneye game isn't mentioned. I'm still hooked on it......

My wife made me take Doom off the computer after she heard my 3yo son tell me to "use the BFG, Daddyl, use the BFG!!!"

If I'd had children, they'd have grown up shooting real guns, not imaginary guns.

I've played a number of these games with my son, but the one that I had to delete and say "no" to was "No one Lives Forever". I love firearms and don't shy away from this stuff but this one made me a bit uneasy. The game itself was OK but it was just a little too realistic.
At least with Doom and Doom II it was Imps and Cacodemons and such...Fantasy stuff. But in NOLF, it was just too much. The only effective way to succeed was to eliminate what were, for all intents and purposes, 'real' people with head shots. One shot to the head then move on to the next target. No imagination or real strategy.

Ten games on the wish list of many children this holiday season ...

Are these games really "on the wish list" of kids this year? I mean Doom II? How many kids are begging for Doom II since it is years old? Gangsters II? Its in the bargain bin. Sounds like people who have not a freaking clue about the gaming industry are throwing together a b*tchfest at the last minute to get on camera.

The gaming industry must be laughing at this lame list. Next they'll probably have a press release about how they are concerned about Space Invaders being racist. LOL

Man! I'd criticize some of these games myself based on the fact that they're older than dirt.

Heck, why don't they come out and denounce the violence in Zork.

I think I remember there was a unicorn in that game I wanted to pummel.

Shame on me & my 64.
