Back when the Shah ran Iran it was our proxy in the Gulf. The Shah protected the oil flow out of the Persian Gulf not the US. The Shah was trying to do what Ataturk did in Turkey make Iran a modern secular state.

So true! The Shah was a relatively good man. He built Iranians their roads and infrastructure, gave them free health and hospital care and education.

The religious leaders turned against the Shah when he took power and took all their large land holdings and riches and gave them to the people instead.

Iran is next, not Iraq.

And just as Saddam heaves a sigh of relief...Rummy says "JUST KIDDING! IT'S IRAQ!" :o)

Let's not forget the Sandinistas. They took over Nicaragua under Jimmy C.'s watch. The guy may be intelligent but he acted like an idiot.

Why give him credit for being intelligent?

NATO is almost irrelevent. The Euro's have managed to let their militaries regress down below Cold War standards, while the U.S. military has moved into the 21st Century with previously unimagined power. Plus, the European economies are ailing. Taken in sum, they don't have enough power to be a major world power away from their borders any longer.

The European Union is in Moral Chapter 11.

The end of the Iranian fundamentalist regime is coming. 20 years too late, but sometimes that can't be helped.

I hadn't seriously thought of this before, but having a friendly Iran, shod of it's extremist Mullahs and thankful for whatever role America played helping that happen, would make for a different and potentially interesting pre-Iraq phase atmosphere.

If you are alluding to the hatred Iranians have against Iraqi's for Saddam's methods in the Iran-Iraq 10 year war, then yes this dovetails quite nicely.

"I can't think of ANYTHING Carter did right."

Carter did almost nothing properly, however, we need to give credit where it is due.

Carter's Camp David Peace accords secured peace between Egypt and Israel.

And that's about all that he got right...

I don't know of any Al Qaeda bases in Saudi Arabia. The Iranian nutball factions are giving Al Qaeda bases in Lebanon.

I don't know of any Al Qaeda bases in Saudi Arabia.

The problem with Saudi Arabia has been their indirect financing for terrorism, plus a multi-tiered failure to fully cooperate with our efforts to fight terrorism.

Complicating matters, Bin Laden is a hero to the average Saudi. The House of Saud is on very shaky ground, and can no longer have it both ways.

I'll give him that. But even on that, the jury still seems to be out.

I agree. There's no way the Iranians would be assisting the Taliban. The Taliban consider the Shiite Muslims of Iran as much infidels as the rest of us. The Iranians are more generous in their description of who is a Muslim, but I doubt they'd assist those who would destroy them.

Iran had been fighting the Taliban and Al Qaeda long before America got involved.

I think the real reason is this.

U.S. officials have said Iran initially cooperated when Washingtom launched its war on terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks. But recently Tehran has been trying to exercise influence in Afghanistan that would undermine a new, internationally-backed broad based Afghan government, they said.

Pakistan is a lot closer to supporting Al Qaeda than Saudi Arabia. The Saudis really finance Al Qaeda wanna-bes.

re : One little detail: Iran was supporting Northern Aliance against Taleban. Iran and Taleban are enemies and do not share the same religion (Islam like Christianity is divided).

Don’t let facts get in the way of a good tale.

Eurasia I mean Iran is now the enemy.

Cheers Tony

I believe Rumsfeld. Now we wait to see what Iran does.

Asked on the ABC "This Week" program if he could confirm a Time magazine report that Tehran helped Islamic militants to escape across the border, Rumsfeld replied: "I can."

I think we should never capture Bin Ladin, and if we do, we should definitely keep it quiet.

Why?

Because he is a walking carte blanche for the the US to go into any Moose Limb country, whenever it wants to, and kick ass.

I would even go so far as have Rummy release disinformation, 'Sources confirm Bin Ladin's presence in X...' Just as if Elvis was spotted somewhere.

Then drive a cruise missile wherever the sun doesn't shine.

Repeat ad infinitum.

This will keep the touchy-feelies quiet, and keep the mongrels under the porch.

It's all good.
