This might be the case, but it would be a mistake to characterize the Founders as Libertarians, because clearly, they were not. Maybe you could call them small-l libertarians, maybe. If you read their works and what they actually did while in office, you will see that they were NOT Libertarians.
BTW, I consider myself a libertarian, so this is not an anti-libertarian rant.
The American revolutionaries were closer to being libertarians than any other modern party. They were certainly closer to being Libertarians than being REPUBLICANS!!!!!
It depends on which Classical Liberal writer you're looking at as to the degree of conformity. In the case of someone like John Stuart Mill, absolutely that is the case.
Exactly right. The Democrats have taken a perfectly good word and tuned into something reviled. The original "liberal" was in favor of both personal liberty, and personal responsibility. Todays "liberal" is in favor of collectivism (communism) and collective irresponsibility. (since there is no such thing as collective responsibility)
They have murdered the word "Liberal".
Example: Worker at bottom bracket pays 12% on his income and 20% on his capital gains. Worker B pays a top rate 38% but 30% on his capital gains tax.
Do you think it was leftists who orchestrated this maneuver?
Leftists (i.e. class warfare types) recognize this. Conservatives cannot have it both ways, which they do. Capital gains are either income or they are not, hence there is no coherent Conservative movement to eliminate it, just tinker with it.
Well some, like Jefferson, were more or less, but others like Hamilton, who was apparently a control freak, weren't. They weren't all perfect:)
Simply because you're a bunch of damned hypocrites! You claim to be "open-minded, tolerant, and enlightened," but your open-mindedness and tolerance don't extend to people that disagree with you! You think that your so-called "enlightenment" gives you the right to tell other people what to do and how to live. Individual Rights be damned! You claim to be for individual Rights, and Freedoms, but that only extends to Rights and Freedoms that you approve of yourself. You're Anti-Death Penalty and Pro-Abortion. You claim to be against violence, then try to use the Military to force people in other countries to behave as you think they should behave. You wave the American Flag and talk about Patriotism at your convention, then denounce the United States at every opportunity, as an evil Capitalist Nation. You talk about separation of Church and State, then do everything you can to deny Christians their Right to Freedom Of Religion, while actively promoting other religions! I could go on and on.
When does the Liberal hunting season start? I have to get my rifle scoped in! LOL
Very intertaining rant. I love to hear Liberals whine! Brings a smile to my face;o)
Ooops, sorry, that's what they call us.
Susan Estrich was on Fox recently. Case in point.
"the eight-hour instead of the 12-hour day"
The evil Henry Ford of the greedy Ford Motor Co. gave us the 8 hour day. He needed to run his factory 24 hours a day to keep up to demand, so he instituted 3, 8 hour shifts.
The liberal solution would have been to put the government in charge of who could buy a car in short supply and put a huge tax on it.
That was Christians. The people Liberals hate today for pointing out the evils of human abortion and human homosexuality.
I will say the government workers are right now stealthily working on a 4 day 32 hour work week for us, for the same "pay" of course, or so they think. They way it works is they sign up for a 4 day 10 hour day work schedule on the pretext of reducing their overall time spent commuting, then leave work 15 minutes after the 8 hour day workers leave. I work in San Francisco and Friday's are fast becoming ghost town days.
