Why are liberals so hated? (barf, gag, retch)
Auburn (NY) Citizen ^ | 3/21/02 | Graham R. Hodges

Posted on 03/21/2002 8:05:45 AM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

I am puzzled, perplexed and sometimes annoyed by the frequent potshots taken at us liberals. Seems like it's open season on us all year long. Not just by the media minions but by their lower ranks as well.

Is it because liberal-haters are malicious, mean people? No, we don't think so. Many are fine, tax-paying, church-going people. Then why? I believe the reason is that they are ignorant of American history or have amnesia regarding it. They have forgotten that American liberals and radicals started the Revolutionary War.

Liberals first pointed out the evils of human slavery. We forget that the great liberal Franklin D. Roosevelt started many liberal programs we take for granted today, such as Social Security, now being robbed by George W. It was called communism by many back then. Medicare, another great liberal program that keeps us oldsters from bankruptcy, was called socialized medicine.

Just a few other liberal programs are workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, bank-deposit insurance up to $100,000 per account, the right of workers to organize and strike, the eight-hour instead of the 12-hour day, old age pensions, survivors' benefits of Social Security, lowering of stock margins from 90 percent to 50, protection of our ancient forests from the loggers so now we can see the giant redwoods, clean water and air act Bush is now eroding by decree, pure food and drug laws, expansion of national wild areas and monuments, voting-rights laws, health insurance and rights for the handicapped.

All these and more were pushed through by liberals and opposed by conservatives. They make America safer and better for all of us, not just the liberals who sponsored and fought for them.

Yes, even the birth-control pill, so widely used by conservative women and their daughters, came from the liberals. Now George W. is trying to deny it to the world's poorest women while his own upper class has easy access to whatever contraceptive they choose. Remember the campaign word "compassionate"?

Meanwhile, liberals pay taxes, obey the laws and support the government in crisis while fighting to save the liberal programs of our land being nibbled away, while being called nasty names for our trouble. Even most conservatives forget that the media is really owned by a few giant conservative corporations for whom the only thing is the bottom line for the top dogs.

Many conservatives who libel us would scream bloody murder if the liberal programs put in place years ago were dropped. They parrot the slogans of the giant media because it is open season on the left and center.

Meanwhile, the "compassionate" man in the White House erodes these programs by edict or failure to enforce the law. Now, more than ever, is the time for liberals to unite, no matter what people say about us

Of all the ridiculous claims put forth by this author, my "favorite" is the idea that liberals are hated because the mainstream media tells us to hate them. BWAH-HAH-HAH!!!

They have forgotten that American liberals and radicals started the Revolutionary War.

That was when "liberal" meant, as one would expect from the root word, "in favor of personal liberty". Since then, a Clintonian definition game shifted the term to mean "in favor of socialism".

Let's see, the American Revolution was fought due to taxation without representation, and the first shot was fired when the British tried to sieze weapons from the colonists.

Where do the liberals come in?

If I were ever made the editor of a newspaper, the first thing I would do is ban all "guest columns" written by local citizens, because none of them can ever write (as this example shows.). I'd also institute a demand that all letters to the editor be written at least at a high-school reading level, or no publication.

Well, okay, that's the second thing I'd do. The first thing I'd do is fire all the biased reporters.

This article is the dumbest load of crap I've read in a long time..........and I read Hellen Thomas's article yesterday.

The American Revolution was largely a tax revolt so, liberals are against taxes? Is that what the author is saying?

He did get that observation correct.

Re #1

Meida always play a role of willing punchbag toward other non-media liberals. then they turn around and tell conservatives that, since they take pot shots from other liberals, media must be moderate, middle of the road, "objective". Only if it is really true. But this situation is no different than Stalin accusing Trotsky of being capitalists. They are all certified communists. But sometimes they accuse each other for not living up to original ideals. Happens in church, too. There are many factions and sect.

The American revolutionaries were Old Whigs, liberals in their time, but what are referred to today by Hayek, Buchanan and others as Classical liberals. Today's liberals are in fact not liberals at all but rather social democrats, and some are outright socialists. The abolitionists were Christian Evangelicals, both here and in England. As an aside, as a double Cornell graduate (B.A and PhD), I really do appreciate these reports from behind liberal lines in Ithaca. Keep them coming

Liberals first pointed out the evils of human slavery.

Classical liberals, you mean, who would be called conservatives and libertarians by today's standards. Modern liberals were the last ones to acknowledge (and in some cases have YET to acknowledge) the evils of 20th century Marxist-inspired social engineering by such liberals-in-a-hurry as Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Castro, Pol Pot, et al.

Liberals remind me of the inhabitants of Flatland, in the book by Edwin A. Abbott. Flatlanders lived in a world of two dimensions -- no up -- and were inherently unable to conceive, recognize or accept the existence of the quality we call height.

They believed they knew the whole universe, and could not be persuaded of the vastly enriched experience that awaited them if they would only look up or down.

Liberals are like that. They see only the left half of the top inch of the reality of human action, and think that they have all the wisdom there is.

Not according to the Washington Post, which clearly points out the democrats budget plan is taking money from social security.

It's very simple (maybe that's why the author doesn't get it) - Liberals are for BIG government, for only the government can solve our problems...we are incapable of fixing things ourselves. Liberals are also fond of anything that "feels good" to society - regardless of the cost, the true nature of the problem, etc....i.e. social security - it's original intents are not what it is used for today (can ANYONE really afford to retire only with SS money?)

Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that INDIVIDUALS can make their own situations better through self determination and hard work - and that the government should help ONLY when needed, not just because it "feels good". We also believe in the Constitution - something many liberals conveniently tried to forget or reinterpret towards their socialist agendas.

See? Very simple - that's why Libs don't get it...everything has to be "complex" for them....

Amen to that! The abolitionists had a tendency to be (shudder) Christians; the 1850's version of National Right to Life. They were abolitioists because they felt it was anti-Christian to own slaves, NOT because they were "liberal". In fact, todays liberals would oppose abolition BECAUSE "religious fanatics" want to "impose their morals" on others.
