Weird - someone said they usually die in threes, and yesterday we had Dudley Moore and Milton Berle.

How old was he? He was an established director when Hitler came to power.

From IMDB.com:

Billy Wilder 1906-2002
In an unbelievable boost to those who love to claim that famous people die in threes, Variety is reporting that writer/director/legend Billy Wilder died Wednesday night (3/27/02) of pneumonia in Beverly Hills. Mr. Wilder was 95. Born in Vienna, Billy Wilder, with his writing partner Charles Brackett, and later with I.A.L. Diamond, created some of the greatest films ever made. Wilder directed such diverse works as Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, A Foreign Affair, Sunset Blvd., Stalag 17, Sabrina, Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like It Hot and The Apartment (to name just a few). He was nominated for 21 Academy Awards® in his life; he won seven (including an Irving Thalberg Memorial Award). Any one of these films would have earned him the title of one of our greatest directors. Taken together they are a legacy that few have equaled or will ever equal.

Stalag 17 and Some Like it Hot are two of my favorite movies. Talented man, but at 95 no one can accuse him of not living to a ripe old age.

Anybody for a dead pool?

No dice, silly. They come in threes. It's been three, so nobody's gonna die now, we're all safe, so to speak.

With Double Indemnity and Some Like it Hot he created arguably the best film noir and best comedy of all time. Anyone who can create masterpieces in such diametrically opposed genres deserves the title of artist.

13:37 PST LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Filmmaker Billy Wilder, the Austrian-born cynic whose gifts for writing and directing led to such classics as "Sunset Boulevard," "Some Like it Hot" and "Double Indemnity," has died. He was 95.

Wilder died Wednesday night at his home, said George Schlatter, a producer and longtime friend. Schlatter said Wilder's health had been failing in recent months.

Lyle Lovett Trampled by Bull

Thu Mar 28, 7:48 AM ET

HOUSTON (AP) - Country singer Lyle Lovett was trampled by a bull and broke his leg Wednesday while trying to help an uncle who had just been flipped by the animal.

Lovett underwent surgery on his lower right leg to reconstruct the bone that was broken in several places, said Memorial Hermann Hospital spokeswoman Beth Sartori. She said Lovett was in good condition.

Lovett, 44, was injured on his uncle's farm in suburban Houston, the Tomball Regional Hospital said in a release. A bull flipped Lovett's uncle, Calvin Klein, 67, and Lovett was trampled while trying to help him.

Klein was taken to Tomball Regional, and later released later.

Lovett's spokesman, Vance Knowles of InKlein Productions, didn't immediately return a call for comment.

Lovett's hits include "If I Were The Man You Wanted" and "San Antonio Girl." Lovett won his first Grammy in 1989 for his album, "Lyle Lovett and his Large Band."

Stalag 17 bump. This is a holiday thing. People tend to hang on until major holidays. Anybody have statistics?

Stalag 17 had its share of laughs too. When Shapiro and the Animal take their bucket of whitewash, paint a line on the prison camp compound, and the German guard obligingly opens the gate for them (giving them access to the Russian women's camp) it's a classic moment of "so stupid it's brilliant" deadpan humor that Wilder specialized in.

"Maybe he just wanted to steal our wire cutters."

Anybody have statistics?

Yeah, as a matter of fact. Three show business personalities died during the Holy Week in 2002. Accuracy factor: 100%. Convinced now?

Big fan of Some Like it Hot and Double Indemnity (featuring a pre- Chip&Ernie Fred Macmurray).

I barely caught a reference to the drummer for Motley Crue.

Not my cup of tea, so I'm not even claiming to put in my $0.02.
