For someone unaccustomed to New York Real Estate prices the numbers can be a shock, but to give you some perspective, a 1 bedroom condo in the Bronx costs 220,000 and the crime rate there is nothing you would be willing to live with. The numbers seem high relative to the rest of the country, but I assure you, my home is not extraordinary.
Here is an example Home. for the area. I'm not crying poverty, I just didn;t plan on an additional 6 to 8 thousand a year in taxes.

Dude, do as I and most of my family did. MOVE OUT OF NY. So your cries of "you don't understand the NY real estate market" are unfounded. I know it damn well and it is one of the reasons I left. As did a large portion of my family.

I have concluded that local governments are at least as corrupt, and often more so, than the feds. There is nowhere left to hide.

wow, nice example home. I grew up in a middle-high class (at the time) neighborhood, and nothing near us looked like that! Maybe in the "rich" part of town. Now I pay 2000 a year in property taxes on a 150,000 home. And I home school!
My advice would have to be to move to one of the blue states. Sorry about your predicament.
