Judge tosses out challenge to Sex Education in Fairfield

(Hartford-AP Apr. 4, 2002 7:45 AM)_ A lawsuit challenging sex education classes in Fairfield schools has been thrown out by a federal judge in Hartford.

Judge Robert Chatigny has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Fairfield man who claimed the town violated the Constitution by refusing to excuse his seventh-grade son from a health course that included sex education.

Dismissing the lawsuit mean the "F" will remain on the seventh-grade transcript of Corky Leebaert for his failure to attend the mandatory class. Leebaert is now a sophomore at Fairfield High School.

The judge says if Fairfield had granted Turk Leebaert's request to exempt his son from the class, it would have given every parent a veto over required courses or lessons.

Chalk up one more brain dead judge. The challenge to this class would not stand up for other classes. You can't make a challenge to a math class on this arguement.

And the downside would be . . . what?

Yet, the Kansas students caught cheating on their tests and given "F's", were granted a passing grade after their parents complained? Isn't THAT lovely.

Public schools in this country are getting so bad that most kids these days are probably too dumb even to become Federal judges.

Either send your kid to the sex class or he will be treated like an outcast anyway. The overriding lesson any kid learns and holds dear is the lesson of his parents' behavior.Strong values drummed in at home and church will overcome any lavender-laced teacher who likes talking about anal sex to kids. In the name of "tolerance" and "diversity" you have the right to paste those NRA stickers next to those little rainbow triangle stickers at school, don't you?

By the way, in CT, by state law, your kid can't take an aspirin or any other OTC medicine at school without a note from an MD. Does any parent have a kid in public school in CT that hasn't overridden that law in the interest of his child?

Besides these relatively minor quirks, most public and private schools in Fairfield County CT are outstanding academic preparation for the most selective colleges. That is the greater good gained by facing, debating and debunking the evils that inevitably occur at school - and indeed throughout life. I'd rather have the chance to give my kids the emotional and logical tools to deal with real-life examples before they leave the nest.

From evidence we've seen here, I'm not certain what you mention is a possibility.
