Imagine if you will, that you were born in Mexico or some other poor nation. You live on the streets. Broke, hungry, sick and no hope. If there is more opportunity somewhere else, wouldn't you go? Would you like people standing on the border denying the opportunity to have a better life? Why should the greatest nation on earth not want to help those who strive for better. After all, we are all here because our ancestors went looking for a better life.

Yeah, hopping the border is SO much easier than making an effort to improve the place they come from.

Sure ---the whole solution is for the whole world's population to move to the US? For Americans to send planes and pick up every unfortunate human in Calcutta, China, Mexico City and all the other poor cities?

How about Mexicans getting together like our Founding Fathers in the US did and writing a Constitution and declaring war on their oppressors. Now that is a solution ---but that takes being willing to fight for something ---not just run to Americans with hands out demanding they take care of you.

Mexico is a very wealthy land, very rich in natural resources. The people are poor because they don't demand a change in their government and they don't change their culture.

God helps those who help themselves. Mexicans will never be a middle class country if they just expect others to do everything for them. They could be a middle class country (Japan was able to do it on far less), if they began to value education and hard work. The United States did have an advantage of inheriting the Puritans Protestant work ethic but there's no reason others can't imitate that in their own homelands.

Yes sir. I can just imagine them when they get here living on the streets, broke, hungry, sick and no hope. All that's changed is geography.

And all of my ancestors arrived here as legal immigrants. Illegal means that those who have here come as wet backs are breaking our federal laws. Do you understand that? I can't help it if Mexican politicians have bled the country dry, suppressed dissent and generally screwed their citizens and ruined their economy.

Mexico sits on a huge supply of oil and should be prosperous and progessive. That it has not improved the situation should not mean that we should be obliged to rescue their poor by allowing them free access to our nation and ignore our laws. I suggest that you volunteer to go to Mexico and help them improve their economy and political system.

Darn, I thought you were joking, but from the question it looks as if you're serious.

Answer: we do help, but for those from societies manifestly backward, why would we want their detritus coming and ruining our society? If these are such quality people that we would want them, why don't they stay home and improve the society in which they live, thereby helping themselves, helping their society, and helping the United States? If they cannot improve their society, why would we want them here?

No you got it wrong....If you were born under those conditions you would more then likely be dead. But if you did survive straighten out your own country and stay out of mine

You don't seem to understand the law of unintended consequences. The end result of your idea would be that the standard of living of the United States would be lowered to that of Mexico. The people immigrating from Mexico and Centeral America have no idea what self governance is, they are used to guns being illegal, they get their information from liberal sources. Once they start to vote they will vote for Democrats, gun control, and every hand out program on the ballot. They will have no loyalty to this country, they are here for the money. Then You, and I will live on the streets. Broke, hungry, sick and no hope.

It is already starting to happen in the Southwest.

They can come if they pass the background check by the American Embassy in their home country. And besides, we're at war, and we're trying to stop terrorist-smuggling into the country (and no, I'm not implying you're with the terrorists like ol' Beaver-Face Ashcroft might).

It bothers me that many in the world think this country should be theirs by rights, as if we were the air or water, as if just because the U.S. exists, it should be free for all. I don't see any Americans hanging out at the borders of any other countries, demanding to be let in.

Just for the sake of argument, suppose you owned the biggest house on the block, and yours was the only one with a swimming pool, and a golf course out back. You had a fence around your house, and all your neighbors protested outside your fence, and demanded the right to use your pool, play on your golf course, and, while they were at it, demanded that you order in food for them while they were enjoying themselves. Doesn't seem fair, does it?

"Why should the greatest nation on earth not want to help those who strive for better."

Very nice thought and in a perfect world it might work. But since we live in an imperfect world, just how long do you think it would be before this was Mexico north? It wouldn't BE a land of opportunity any more because the entire dynamic would change. It is bad enough as it is. Maybe if these people are so dissatisfied they should focus on making their own country a better place to be.
