Sharon Says It: We Will Crush Them

As Secretary of State Colin Powell heads to Israel, Ariel Sharon said exactly what's on his mind in response to these continuing calls from the United States to pull out of the terrorist-infested regions. He told TV viewers that Israel's military offensive will continue until Palestinian militias have been crushed because, "This is a battle for the survival of the Jewish people, for the survival of the state of Israel."

His message (I'm paraphrasing here) is - "I'm not pulling outta here. You can say whatever you want to me. You can make demands. You can treat me like I'm one of your employees when I'm not. You can do whatever, but I am going to save my country, just as you would save yours." Unstated here is the next thing: "Now just be quiet and leave me alone. I'll talk to you when I'm finished."

As John Podhoretz wrote in Monday's New York Post: "Sharon Doesn't Work for Bush." This is the end of diplomacy. When someone says that you can tell them from now until the sun goes down to do something but I'm not, that's big. Powell has his work cut out for him. This after the Secretary of State received a "chilly" reception from the King of Morocco, and held a feisty press conference in Egypt. Powell was glad to see the Israelis begin a pullout, and realized that you can't do so in one shot.

When asked if the U.S. viewed Arafat as the leader of the Palestinians, Powell gave a pretty broad response. The fact is, Arafat is a dictator. The Palestinians living inside Israel, who are Israeli citizens, don't leave that nation, do they? No! They're doing fantastic compared to the Israelis living in the neighboring Arab dictatorships. The problem here is clearly Arafat and his dictatorship, not the Israelis. Treating him as a democratically elected leader is smoke and mirrors.
