The "deacons" have not been around for long enough and they are NOT what the liberals have a problem with, you see. The "real" Catholic clergy -- priests, bishops, and the Pope -- is the target.

Deacons are "real" clergy, since they possess Holy Orders. But, you knew that.
I just don't get the hand-wringing over making celibacy optional.
It will take a generation or more before the Church lives down the negative PR from this pederast scandal; even a man called to the priesthood won't want to put up with young mothers shepherding their children away from him and the whispers behind his back when he's in public in a collar.
The only negative that's been raised so far that has any real credibility is the financial one, and I don't see that as serious at all; Catholics are notorious skinflints and will have to face up to providing something beyond poverty wages for those who serve them.
