Terrorist attacks planned in Oslo
Police shut down central avenue Parkveien in Oslo Tuesday to increase security around the Israeli embassy. Last week several Muslim men reportedly said they were willing to be suicide bombers in Oslo.
Security is high around around Jewish targets in Oslo.
Barriers and armed police are rare sights in central Oslo, an indication of how seriously bomb threats are being taken. PHOTOS: OLAV OLSEN Oslo police have also placed large stones as barriers in front the synagogue in St. Hanshaugen. On Sunday the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) were informed that Muslim youths had expressed their willingness to die a martyr's death to hit Jewish targets in Oslo. On Wednesday PST officers will leave the country to continue their investigation abroad.
Parliamentary Secretary Vidar Helgesen at the Foreign Minister's office was the first to hear of the attack plans, and he warned Minister of Justice and Police Odd Einar Dørum, who called in the PST.
Norwegian authorities were tight-lipped about how they interpreted the situation and what it might mean for the average Oslo resident.
"We are of course taking this seriously, it is a tricky situation. We have received tips of several concrete targets for bomb attacks. One of them is the celebrations around Israel's independence day in a few weeks," said PST inspector Øystein Berger.
Information of possible attacks on Jewish targets became known after a central figure in Muslim religious circles in Oslo alerted authorities last week. This came in addition to news gathered by intelligence services. Aftenposten has been informed that the PST has been working closely with a wide network of foreign organizations.
The man who warned of possible suicide bombings in the capital had been present at a meeting in an Oslo mosque last week. The discussion involved several powerful Muslim figures trying to decide on a course of action in connection with recent clashes in the Middle East.
The witness was so shocked he warned Norwegian authorities. The informant also said that fund-raising for explosives and other equipment is already well underway. Several young men have enlisted to take on the "honorable assignment" of dying in the fight against Israel if Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is killed.

Bibi warned about this.
