I would agree that the public school system is a farce and in shambles. My daught is in 8th garde and has "subs" on a regular basis because her teachers are "in class getting their Master's"...

Dunno how YOUR emploter is, but if I was absent 20% of the time, I'd be looking for a new job!

Many (most) cannot afford private/relgious/parochial school costs@ The solution is to take back the schools and make the Dept. of Ed. accountable for curriculum delivery, and standards!

When our kids leave HS not knowing the state capitals, how a bill becomes law, cannot locate Scotlan on a globe, and cannot explain the Korean War, WW II, who Lee Harvey Oswald was, etc., WE have a problem!

Parents need to demand action, accountability, and need to see results...demand to see policies, credentials (half the "subs" do not ho,d degrees in any dsaicipline, much less one they may be teaching...oopppsss...forgot....they (subs) do "movie day"!

We tried. We lost. (See 1980's.) Dobson is 30 years late. Government schools were lost in the 60's. I home schooled through the 80's. We were ridiculed, told that kids were supposed to "evangelize" the lost in the schools. Where were these guys when they should have been running from the public schools? They were telling us to stay put. It wasn't until the 90's that Evangelicals started to create their own schools, but as you've noted, it can be costly.

The answer still is the home school. (If both parents are working and can't afford a Christian school, then they need serious career/financial counseling.)
