A 26-year-old Immokalee High teacher was arrested Thursday on charges she had a sexual relationship with a former student in Gainesville and had a child with the teen-age boy, authorities say.
San Juanita Cardenas, of 607 Sixth Ave. Circle, Immokalee, was arrested on an Alachua County warrant for lewd and lascivious battery.
Cardenas, who joined the staff at Immokalee High in mid-January as a foreign language teacher, was being held in the Immokalee Jail.
She was expected to be picked up by Alachua County deputies. She was arrested after school officials called her to the office at the high school.
Authorities say Cardenas lived with and had a 17-month-long sexual relationship with a then 15-year-old boy that started in January 2000. Cardenas gave birth to a daughter in April 2001, authorities say.
He was a student where she taught at The Rock, a non-denominational private school in Gainesville, said Alachua County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Linda White.
"It came to our attention pretty quickly," she said.
She said the boy, who is now 16 years old, reported the sexual relationship to authorities. She couldn't elaborate on why he reported the relationship to police because the investigation is ongoing.
Alachua County deputies sent a teletype to Collier County deputies, informing them that Cardenas was wanted. The warrant was issued Thursday.
Within an hour, deputies from the warrants bureau were at the school and had Cardenas under arrest.
Cardenas was still on probation in her job as a teacher, said Collier County School District spokesman Joe Landon. She is officially considered on administrative leave without pay, but district officials will recommend to the School Board that she be suspended without pay.
But because she was arrested during her probationary period, she will not return to the school, Landon said.
A background check on Cardenas done at the time of her hiring, which would include checks by the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, was not yet completed, Landon said.
But since the warrant hadn't been issued until Thursday, there would be no record of the warrant.
Where I live a 28 year old teacher had a fling with a 14 year old girl. He was sent to jail for 6 years, got out on probation, then the girl, whom I met, told the courts that the guy should have to serve his full term, rather than get out early. So, the police came and got him, took him away from his wife and kids who dearly wanted him out of jail and threw him back in jail for another several years.
When women are caught in this it's normally no big deal. when men are caught it is 'pedophilia' and they throw the book at em.
The experience had a very negative impact on me. I understood too clearly what whores women could be, these were all married women.
People laugh and people joke about these types of events. If women in our society have their way without limitation they will routinely seek teenage boys for sex. That would be very bad for society. of course it is going on more now in this age of liberation, it is very common.
